Default Top replacement done wrong...

06 with 24k miles. Had a rip in the usual spot on the passenger side just above the passengers right ear (if a pass were sitting there).

Took it in to have it replaced. They had the car for a while and I was out of town.

Problems:
1. Top doesn't fold properly. Elastic straps were installed incorrectly, so the first brace didn't 'flop' like it is supposed to.

2. Seals improperly installed and in certain cases left out! - top leaked like a sieve in certain areas when I washed it - there was water on the steering wheel!

Just an FYI for all the newer (mostly 06 it seems) owners who have experienced tears in their tops and have required replacement.

I don't live in a large city, and thus my dealer rarely gets a S2000 in for service, let alone top replacement.

Yikes that sucks. Are you taking it back or going somewhere else?

yeah that sucks, after getting mine back I just realized they neglected to replace the elastic straps so it doesn't pull the bar back very well. Other than that, they did a great job. I may just get the modifry straps though so I don't have to deal with dropping my car off at the dealership again.

That is precisely the reason why I've held off replacing my top. What did the dealer have to say about the matter?

The Honda dealer is the worst place to take your car for service. The reason? Flat-rate compensation

Your friendly Honda technician is compensated for quantity of work performed, not quality. Of course, if you have a warranty repair you don't have much choice. Your best option in that case is to establish a relationship with a Honda dealer tech somewhere - and even that may not get you anywhere.

I pretty much pray that my car never needs service. Otherwise, I do it myself whenever possible.

Yeah, I don't have much confidence in dealer techs anymore. And they suck at finesse work like installing accessories or replacing a top.

Thanks for sharing. This gives me insight into why owners ditch their cars after changing the top, possibly.

I don't think he had much of a choice on where to take it since I think he claimed it on his warranty.
I sympathize anyone who does the replacement, but this was also one reason why I did it myself... and I'll never do it again.

After leaving car with dealer, they disassembled the seal on the passenger side, and installed it properly and had their shop foreman inspect the work. They've done a great job, and I was pleased. However, I was miffed to find that they did not do the same on the driver's side! Thus, I've taken the car back yet again, to have them to the driver's side seals.

Either way, it seems like their doing what they can to make sure everything is A+, so I'm fine with that.

The top wasn't folding properly because the elastic bands hadn't been wound around the first brace tightly enough - this was fixed as well.

FYI for those who have their tops replaced or might do so in the future: don't be afraid to take the car back and ask to have seals refitted or adjusted if you feel that they haven't been done right the first time. It helps to have a unmolested top to compare with.

It hurts to say this, but I have to call the Honda S2000 a failure. The reason I say this is because it doesn't matter what the MY, tops are having to be replaced because of a defect that persists for a decade.

I'm facing a major repair for my year and a half old car, a top replacement. This is a major job, a major nightmare, with the possibility of major issues cropping up after the job is done.

None of us should have to suffer through this.
