Top replacement done wrong...
s2kobsession:
Did you mean to say your top was replaced "incorrectly?" You said "correctly."
I just spoke in depth about this top issue with a service manager. He told me he can replace the top, but he has no authority to fix the defect that caused the hole in the first place.
This doesn't make sense to me.

post edited thanks.
I think the area that fubar'd my new top is right on the edge where the elastic attaches. There seems to be a metal piece wrapped around the bar that holds the elastic tight and that corner poked a hole. Yea, I know it's tough to understand and explain maybe i'll take a pic later.

I don't buy it. The majority of S2000s do not have a problem with the top. There appears to be a quality control problem with the frame mechanism that I think Honda should address. People act like a convertible top covering should last for the life of the car and it is just not realistic. I bought this car with the expectation of replacing the top at some point since it is a convertible and that is expected on a rag top if you are going to keep the car for 200K miles or so. I would expect the top with proper care, to last 100-150K miles though. There also appears to be a separate issue with the elastic straps that causes the top to misfold and can lead to the hole at the latches. I think this may be combined with leaving the latches undone when lowering the top but I'm not quite sure on that one. I still think that the requirement to relatch the latches is not the best design and at the very least, begs for a warning label near the latches.

I clean and use 303 protectant on my top weekly and always have. I also help the elastics do their job and still getting a hole. I sure as hell don't expect my top to last the life time of the car, but I do expect it to last a 5-10 years.
My dad has a 1975 vette and he just replaced the soft top for the first time a year ago, now go put that in your pipe and smoke it you fool.
I have gotten a small hole that developed in the same spot. I took it to have it patched nicely for 20$. I fail to understand why so many people are replacing there tops instead of fixing them. Before they put the new top on they should take care of the problem area. My car has 64k miles and this is the first time I have had a hole develop. Even if I was under warranty there isn't a chance in hell any Honda dealership would be taking care of the problem. Been to 3 and so far crappy experiences. So I avoid them like the plague. If the dealer keeps doing it wrong you should have had them outsource it to a competent upholstery shop. All of this is just my opinion of course

^ What I am saying is there are many holes I have seen so far that can be fixed instead of changing out the whole roof. My gf also got an S2k with a rather large hole that got fixed and its been trouble free for 6 months. The ones that are a large tear, yea I can see replacing. However the little holes can all be fixed and will hold up for a quite a long time.
