Trade my S2000 for a 135
It was said about the 3 vs the 1, and can be said about the 1 vs the S2000: Do you want comfort and size, or do you want to drive? :-O
Love my 135, completely different animal. It's still a lot of fun to drive, and probably more run for 1-7/10ths street driving. The S is world more fun when pushing it hard on a back road, and probably in track driving also. Obviously the S is slower around a race track stock vs stock, but unless you're actually racing competively, this is a nonissue. You'd have a better time losing in the S than winning in the 1.
Pluses of 1:
-Better steering feel, big time
-Better brakes, big time
-Much faster
-Much more comfortable
-Much more room
-Much more modability
-Much smoother ride
-Better gasmileage
Pluses of S2K:
-Everything else!!
If you don't need a more luxurious 4 seater, keep the S. If you're wanting for a bit more space and civility, I strongly reccomend the 1er.
If I could keep the S as a second car, I would have. I just really needed something with more room, comfort, and practicality. The 1er fit the bill perfectly.
EDIT: Also, if you're planning to buy, not lease, and are going to keep the car stock, look at an E46 M3. It's more of a raw feeling than the 1, with comparable interior space, better looks, similar or cheaper cost to get into, stock LSD, etc. I'm not keeping the car stock, so the 1 was an easy choice for me, but if you're leaving things stock, I'd say the M3 gets the nod. I honestly think the 1 is just as much fun to drive normally, but if you like pushing it a bit, I think the M is superior.
If you're planning on modding, I'd stick with the 1. The only areas lacking compared to the M3 are the relatively soft stock suspension, slightly undersized tires, and of course the LSD.

Wouldnt an EVO X make more sense if you want something faster? You can drive it anywhere anytime, sprinkle some chips on it and make 400hp+ , and have 4 doors. Its all subjective, but I won't buy a German car until I am rich enough to have a Japanese car to drive in its place when it breaks. Every person I have known that is close to me that has had one: Dad, Mom, GF, friend, Grandma, 2 uncles, have had problems with their BMW, Audi, VW, and Porsche on a consistant basis since new. from stupid stuff that is under waranty but takes 1-2 weeks to get fixed so your stuck with the loaner de jour, to an entire engine that was not warrantied...twice.
Why not keep the S an then in a few years get another car, have the S paid off by then. I think I will always keep my S, in 2 years or so I would like to get into possibly a used Viper or Porsche GT-3, but never had the thought of getting rid of my S crossed my mind.
The 1 series looks like a cheap cheap entry level BMW, but its not cheap at all. The power is nice but if powers all you want, go get a GTO. If its an image thing, get a 328, because its the cheaper of the BMW's and looks a hell of a lot nicer then a 1 series. In my opinion BMW's have lost their prestige, they are everywhere...............they are unreliable, and they are expensive for what they are. (M5 is impressive)
The S2000 is 9 years old, and people still turn their heads and ask questions about it, the 1 series people will ask you if your 3 series has Downs Syndrome........

It isn't that much of a reach to a 330i which is more (and maybe a better) car. Before you buy try one of each on. And note that the 130 is almost as heavy as a 3.
It's hard to beat a 3 series.

hate the 1 series and how it looks. might have a nice engine but i just can't get over the fact that the back looks just like a hyundai elantra from the 90's. but i guess ppl that has to have the newest thing in the market will go for the 1 b/c it just came out and s2000's are starting to fade away...

Maybe it was just there cars? My M3 and my dads S55 AMG haven't really been in the shop, especially the AMG but then again it's an 06 model so the newness may have some say in this but my M3 is an 02, yes, stupid stuff did break at first but it was repaired within 10-15 minutes of bringing it to BMW. For major stuff it only took 2 days like when they had to diagnose and then it was a part that they did not carry but I wouldn't have minded if I gotten stuck with the loaner seeing that they were the X3 and the 335i.
If SlipAngle was referring to MB's from 2000-2003 then yes I'd wholeheartedly agree. Those were the dark years of Daimler-Benz where their focus was in the wrong place (technology versus quality). Nowadays, most of the cars are trouble free with Daimler-Benz's recommitment to quality.

Really what kind of gas mileage are you getting?
~30 highway at 60-70 mph is what most are reporting.
As for reliability, BMW is consistantly in the top 5, and often the top 3. I wouldn't worry about it.
I don't like the dash layouts of the newer Bimmers.. It's not very driver oriented IMO. Also..I've been burnt in the past by BMW issues that aren't corrected until a few years after a model has been out, so buyer beware. Honda reliability and piece of mind would put me in the buyer seat everyday.
