Traded in the S for a 328i
The dealer gave me $27,000, with the tax break you get on trade-ins in Illinois that accounts for a private party sale of $28,900.
2001 9700miles Silver Red.
I got a very good deal on a certified 328i so the trade-in number is an accurate reflection of the S by itself.
My salesman (I've worked with him for years and I trust him) said they are going wholesale for $26,500-$27,500 for 2001s.
If you are in Chicago and looking for an S2000 with a hard-top (should have privately sold that) go to Motorwerks of Barrington and talk to Brian Bissup(847-381-8900) mention my name as he doesn't work with walk-ins. They can sell it for $28,500 (with hard-top) and still make some change on it. The car was babied for most of its short life.
I'll miss the S but I won't miss driving it on my regular commute in the Chicago burbs.
So long and thanks for the fish.
This is a great message board.

As someone who's interested in buying a used S2k (which would be used as a daily driver), would you mind telling what prompted your decision to go for the 328is?
BTW, did you get an E46 0r E36 328is?

I just rode in my brother in laws 328I ...nice but no s2000. Way to isolated from the rode for me. The radio really sucks in the 328I. Much worse than the "s". It was the first time i've been in a bmw in some years. I was suprised at how isolated from the road it was.
My friend dad was a V.P. at BMW in the late 80's. His dad would bring home a new BMW every month. They where much more in tune with with the driver and the road back then....not as fast but fun to beat on. The m5 was vicous and the 325is about 1988 was a pure drivers car. Sure they are faster now ...but definetly more isolated. But if i needed a sedan i would most likely get a bmw.
p.s. ya need the warrenty big time....lots of little stuff goes wrong.
Usually never engine problems but all thise luxury gadgets get quirky sometimes. p.s. the mpg analog gauge is such a waste of dash space. But like i said if i was getting a sedan it would be a bmw! p.s. 2001 with a hard top and under 10,000 miles would sell for an easy 32,000 grand. Dimes to dollars the have it up for sale at like 32,500. and won't take under 31,000. 1500 on a used car is chump change.....they look for 3 grand profit on a used car min. Dealers make more money on the used car dept than the new cars......Its a fact. Thats why they always try to sell ya a used one even if your interested in a new one.
Bmw makes huge profits on certified....some one paid 500 dollars a month for a least two years before you got that 328i. thats 12,000
grand and not even taken into account a downpayment....bet you piad close to 30 grand or above for the 328i. when new at list it was a 36,000car. you do the math. BMW=OVERPRICED. Even car and driver will admit that.
RULE #1 . Trust a salesman and get screwed!
