Transmission service
I finally had to take my 2000 S2000 in for a new clutch. I have 52,000 miles. They kept it four days and when I went in to pick it up it was a total disaster. The clutch felt like an old VW bug clutch. The shifter was mushy and when I put it in gear it would stay in gear but the shifter flopped to the middle. It was like stirring a salad. It was just awful. I went two blocks and came right back. Service manager apologized and said "yeah, I thought it was a little loose, but I haven't ever driven a 2000". Now they say I need new bushings in the tranny. That doesn't seem right. The shifter was as tight and quick as the day I bought the car. Why would a new clutch installation screw with the shifter action? Is the analysis of new bushings correct or are they off base. Also what can be done to make the new clutch feel like the original? I am wondering whether I need new parts at all. Whatever happens I am not paying for additional labor to drop the tranny again.
A common problem I've seen is that the plastic cup that goes on the end of the shifter stalk gets broken. This leads to the shifter having a lot of play and being able to move around a lot. Maybe they broke that for you. I bet that's the problem. It's something that's fairly easy to check yourself to see also. There's a how-to halfway down this thread that can explain how to take the shifter out. It's only three bolts: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=83548
