trying to explain to a guy at work :-(
There are LOTS of other cars with VTEC (or other variable valve timing). It is a great idea and works wonders to make the car drivable and lower RPM yet pump out the power at higher RPMs. My 330i has "double VANOS" variable valves - in fact it is getting hard to find any kind of medium to high-end car w/o variable valve timing of some kind.
The difference between the rest of the world and the S2000 is the 9000 RPM redline and the aggresive nature of the VTEC. When I drive mine I think they designed the motor to under-perform w/o VTEC just to make the "kick" so pronounced
You are wasting your breath trying to explain your performance car to a non-enthusiast. Folks will think you are nuts because you don't put the 4 to $99 tires on your car as well
Take them for a drive, if they still don't get it then get them a Viagra sample and give up - they are beyond hope and may be near death

Take him for a drive through a tunnel or underpass. 50mph in second gear should do it. If he still doesn't understand, he needs to be shot. Not really.
Or, at 60ish mph on the freeway, drop it from 6th to 3rd and just floor it. You'll probably want to repeat it several times just to be sure.
My favorite is to 'cruise' in my neighborhood at 25~30mph in 1st gear. I pass by some guy in his 40s with a Grand Caravan Sport on the way to school; if he's outside he looks at me and shakes his head. Down the street I pass by some guy also in his 40s with a C4 and C5 Z06; he smirks and gives me a thumbs up.
If they don't get it, they don't get it. Just leave it at that.

Trying to explain the S2000's VTEC rush to a non-enthusiast is a lot like explaining a sunset to a blind man.
Anyone with Jap bike experience has no problem.
On the street I find myself driving differently than most of you others - When given the chance on surface streets, I like to accelerate in VTEC thru first and second gear (for the kick), then (because I'm already at "arrest-me" speed) skip third altogether and drop in directly in fourth and cruise. Sustaining high RPM for long periods of time is tough on the engine, not to mention my hearing and driving record.

Make sure you make that shift very slowly, leaving it in neutral for a couple seconds, or you can crack your 4th gear synchro. If you go from 9K RPMs in 2nd to 4K RPMs in 4th, the transmission internals need more time to slow down.
