Default TST 5000 Paint Protectant

I am a VERY happy owner of a 2003 Spa Yellow I picked up last month. I've wanted an S2000 since I saw it at the NY Auto Show in 1999! Mine has the TST 5000 with Teflon paint protector applied to it. They basically don't even recommend waxing it. A paste wax will add to the gloss but not any additional protection. It's supposed to maintain 70% of its properties after 5 years. Does anyone else have this and if so have you done anything with it? Cheers!

Never heard of it, you have a link to a website about it?

First congrats on the new S2000, It's a great car.

Second, I don't want to burst your happy bubble but I wouldn't rely on that stuff. Much like all dealer paint "sealants" and "protectants" it offers nothing but a profit center to the dealership. They pay $10 for a bottle of crap and charge you $600 to apply it. Sorry but no wax, polish or polymer will last beyond 6 months. Most only 8-12 weeks. If you read through the TST materials on their website, many of their claims are highly suspect. Like this quote "Each vehicle is thoroughly cleaned - not just the surface, but through the paint and primer..." I've been into detailing cars for about 16 years now and you simply cannot clean THROUGH the paint and primer. It doesn't even seem like they know how paint is applied and how it works. Someone else may know this better than I but from my understanding of Teflon, it takes intense heat to make it bond and the surface has to be extremely clean.

I also like this gem from their website:

"Car dealerships

A free 28 day trial of this proven profit program is now available."

Read up on the posts in the Wash and Wax Forum or visit sites like www.autopia.org. My advice. Go get yourself a jar of P21S/S100 if you like Carnuba or some Zaino Z5/Z2 if you're into polymers.

It is a rip off - there are no miracles in a bottle - they sell stuff for 10x markup and hype you - when you file a claim, they either highly buff the clearcoat, or blame you for fine print violations. Plus, don't they require regular re-treatments? Teflon does not work in oil or in car wax.

here is what DuPont itself has said:

"The addition of a Teflon fluoropolymer resin does nothing to enhance the properties of a car wax. We have no data that indicates the use of Teflon is beneficial in car waxes."

I have the TST applied to three of my vehicals. It is a great sealant. I have put my cars along side of others that were the same year and it's amazing the difference in how much nicer my car looks in comparison. This will be the third year on the Audi TT and it still looks like it came out of the showroom other than the little stone marks on the front. You should have gotten a kit with your purchase. It comes with a cleaner and wash which I highly recommend. Use two capfuls to a gallon of water. You will be amazed how well it cleans. I also had the TST put on my Toyota Land Cruiser and Toyota Prius but they are to new for me to compare those two vehicals. Tar and bugs do come off fairly easy if you wash a couple times a week. The longer the tar and bugs stay on the dryer they get and seem to be much more difficult to remove no matter what you use. Also bug juice has an acidic content and will etch into the paint as will bird dropings. Get them cleaned off as fast as possible. Good luck with your new car and TST!
