two S2000's crash in Philly 1 dead.....
I'm not even going to look. Hitting a tree at 80 the deceleration (possibly resulting in internal injuries/broken neck/torn aorta/any number of things) could kill you even with seatbelts and an intact cabin. The tragic thing is it's usually the youngest members of society who kill themselves in this way which makes it really bad for the family.
While this accident is tragic, I see no reason to post it as a NOTE in the Street Encounters forum because those who post there regularly are well aware of the dangers involved in such activities and have seen and/or read similar instances in the past. If these constant reminders were of any effect, there wouldn't be any reason to even HAVE such a forum. My take is not all encounters are inherently wreckless. Driving down the street at 80mph and suddenly losing control of the vehicle can happen ANYWHERE. From what I can gather, doing so in that section of Philly was horribly ill-advised as it looked residential, however two automobiles on the interstate rolling from 3rd gear, while dangerous to a certain extent simply because of the proximity of the other vehicle, is an encounter that does NOT belong thrown into the pile of inexcusable behavior. Not everyone races like this. Hell, for all we know, one guy may have had a supercharger and the other guy was stock and they were just comparing "notes." Tragic results? You bet, but I don't recall anyone lamenting the two who earlier posted an mpeg of such an encounter. All I recall were posts talking about how much of a difference there was between each car's performance. I don't recall anyone saying how reckless their comparo run was.
Don't get me wrong, this is a immeasurable loss to many, family, friends, etc but how many would buy this car if its top speed was 79 mph? Let's not use a tragedy to preach to what essentially, as soon as the weather turns nice, is a silent pulpit We label these events accidents for a reason. Tragic? You bet, but death could happen from any one of us pushing our cars through the woods at a higher than posted speed limit because, in our minds, the car was built for such driving pleasure. What if the video showed a guy skidding down a cliff while someone from behind was taping it? Would we all write, "he shouldn't have been driving his car through that canyon road like that." Let's not kid ourselves. Most of us at one time or another have driven our S2000's at speeds well above the posted limit and any # of circumstances might have arisen that would have put us in such an unfortunate spotlight. What bothers me the most about this event was the fact that they put others at risk while doing their run. I mean, look at the background video. They should of found a deserted stretch of road and run 'em there but leave the innocent out of it.
Again, I want to end my .02 by saying this was a horrible set of circumstances but it sounds to me like he hit a patch of road that either had loose gravel from winter road preparation or something else. Even a tar road without any sign of ice/snow on it, this time of year (Philly especially) isn't going to be the kind of surface I would ever want to scream down.
My prayers go out to the families. I wouldn't be surprised if they prosecute the surviving driver of the yellow car..

I agree, someone who engages in street racing is a person who's maturity level is about as low as it can get. There are simple to many varibles be it on an interstate at 2 AM or a residential area at noon. There are so many outlets now available to drive our cars to the limit in a safe way at track events that street racing should have long ago been a thing of the past. The biggest problem was treating the results as an accident. The good news is that this has changed and is continuing to change with more and more drivers being charged with manslaughter and now in some cases murder. In this case I am sure the minimum charge will be manslaughter and perhaps a higher charge will result. So much was lost in this one act of self gratification. Lives and futures are both shattered and it is a tragedy for everyone involved. Once you have heard a mothers wailing over her dead child resulting from a 17 year old idiot racing it will stay with you for the rest of your life. Its a sound unlike anything you will every hear and will be in my mind forever . Forever is a long time.

I lost a close friend in high school and another in college doing this exact thing...fortunately (if you can say fortunate in any situation where someone dies) only the drivers were killed...but I can cringe every time I hear about someone street racing...I think the Fast and the Furious caused a lot of damage along those lines...
