Since we are talking oranges and apples here I happen to own both of the cars pitted against each other in this post. I have a 1997 C5 Corvette and a 2000 S2K. Sure the vette will bust ass off the line and it will shift hard as hell. It also uses up EMT Goodyears every 13k miles (which cost somewhere around $325 for fronts and $400 for rears). My vette is a targa top and an automatic. I love it for what it is. It uses ALOT more gas than does the S. It shakes and rattles and since I have had it I have had many problems with it including two blown speakers ($400/per est.), seatbelts that wouldnt retract, burnt up rear fuel pump, steering lock up, while in my driveway, with front end and linkage repairs and some other minor problems. Look this is a Chevy and we ALL know from years of self and others experience that no American auto maker can produce a Honda or BMW type quality product <my opinion>. As for the S2000 I love it for what it is also..............a quality, compact, sport convertible that gets 30MPG on the highway and corners like it is glued to the road(also like that you can push superbike numbers on the tachometer!!!). I have had many cars and up until now none of them were imported. I always believed that you get more for your money buying american. The truth <my opinion> is that you get alot of horsepower, torque, pretty gadgets in the interior, and eye appeal. What you dont get is quality, longevity, and trade-in/re-sale value. As someone on this thread mentioned earlier if you do buy the vette, please plan on keeping it because you will never come close to getting a competitive resale for it. It is a buyers market on all cars and vettes are no longer that rarely seen car they once were. They are a pretty Z-28 with better braking, suspension and interior features. Well I will end this long, boring exposistion. Just thought that since I can speak in depth on both cars considered I may be able to help.

Honestly, I can understand how this guy feels. I believe that the car was pushed to be faster than it really was. To enjoy this car, you have to enjoy balance and a convertible top, not power. The car has some "get up and go", but not enough for many people's taste. I looked at a 99 Vette when I decied on the S and I am happy about my decision. I think that the S is a better looking car, plus it's a convertible, plus it is rare, plus it's a Honda. If you can spare all the extra power that the Vette gives you, in basically every other categorey, the S will win.

Untrue. The pedal engagement point can be adjusted with a hydraulic (see I can spell) clutch, I've done it on my Integra GS-R. What IS true about a hydraulic clutch is that as it wears, the pedal engagement point won't change.

Why did it take you 3500 miles and $30,000 some odd dollars to figure out what you wanted?
A test drive should have made you decide yes or no.

Were you considering a used 99 or 00 Corvette Coupe , because the prices would then be similiar to a new S2000?

Then, I don't see any real decision to make:
Great handling, great looking convertible by Honda vs. Used Chevy.. It's a USED CHEVY!!!

I don't care what the name of the car is, it's a USED CHEVY. Most likely roughly used.
Do not buy a used Vette. If your going to buy one, make sure it's new.

Now, if it's a new Corvette Convertible, that's a different story. But then again, thats a $50,000 car.

Bought in October of last year. My 2000 Camaro SS that in April of 2001, was purchased for $30K. The guy bought it for his wife, she didn't like it. I bought it with 2800 on the odo for $24,000. When I sold it four months later, I could only muster $22,750 for it with 7,000 on the odo.
Define depreciation?
One word. Domestic.

Maybe you need to learn HOW to drive your car... otherwise good luck with the Vette, just don't bitch when in two years, it starts falling apart.
I love all the domestic bashing...what a stereotype. All I know is that the Z06 is far more reliable and has had far fewer Techinical Bulletins than the S. Want to start talking about miles over 100k? Like any of you are going to have your S at 200k plus. That's an Accord attribute not one belonging to an engine with a 9k RPM redline. I am extrememly eager to see just how well the S holds up after 100k miles. Not too many are there yet.

I feel your pain thrillr. I was going to trade in my 2002 Z28 on an S about four months ago but something held me back from doing so. It's a wondeful car but the lack of room turned me off. I will be getting an 03 Z06 in December and can hardly wait. I still love the rides my friend gives me in his S though. The engine sounds mean as hell up in the higher RPM's but the lack of torque is somewhat depressing.

Dude, after you sell your S, and go out and buy a Z06, you will have probably lost/spent (depends how you look at it I guess) enough money to have built yourself one of the fastest S2000's out there. Unless you just hate the car, keep it! You could have an S that could compares to a Z06 in QM time, and have something very, very rare. If you go out and buy a Z06, you will be just be another C5 on the road...
