[QUOTE=xviper,Feb 8 2006, 06:10 PM] I'm afraid you've learned wrong.

Aren't there quite some times you would need/want to downshift more then 1 gear due to rapidly slowing traffic or any other situation or to have to make a quick move?
As I've alluded to in other threads, don't confuse manouvers that can be considered "emergency" or near emergency. These fall into a completely different catagory of transmission operation. I could type reems and reems of explanation about this, but this has been done before.
Remember when I said that skip shifting up or down "can" be done. I don't wish to go into the details of when and how to do this correctly as this has been discussed lots in other threads.
However, suffice it to say that during the type of manouver that you are presenting, the time frame in which it happens is NOT similar to those who would simply be driving along and then immediately skip shift into another gear.

I cannot understand that you would have to go down through all the gears sequentially until you hit the gear you need!
Again, I'd like to reiterate that you don't "HAVE" to IF you do it "CORRECTLY". The sad fact is, many people don't do it correctly and that is why it is a "general" recommendation that skip shifting is bad. Even when in-depth explanations are given, it is impossible to separate those who understand the concepts discussed from those who don't.

Never had any problems downshifting more then 1 gear at a time for nearly 20 years, especially in the Astra GSI 16v that I used to have for almost 10 years! I cannot believe Honda would make such a lousy transmission
I would ask that you analyze your statement and pose to yourself some other questions. In the 20 years that you have been driving manual cars, how many of those were close gated 6 speed manuals? How many of those were in little cars (as opposed to cars like Vipers and Vettes and Ferraris that have "giant" transmissions by comparison). Honda doesn't make a "lousy" tranny. In fact, the S2000 tranny is one of the finest, most precise, most smooth operating close gated 6 speed manuals in the world. It is the envy of almost any other manufacturer who puts out a 6 speed manual. Don't let its "character" and the inability of some operators to understand how best to work this tranny, cause you to label it as "lousy".

in quick situations, why not just put the car in neutral, and then apply the brakes?

that is what they are there for. the brakes are designed to slow/stop the car. the transmission can slow the car, but wasn't necessarily designed for it...

Thx for all the info xviper (and the rest of you of course)! I was just wondering about the downshifting, that's all. Wouldn't want to do the gearbox any harm...

Never knew skipping gears could be 'that' bad. Glad to know it now and once again, thanks to the great site we have here!!!

As you stated, I only skip shifts in some rare situations, but I can imagine that people would want to skip sometimes on downshifting, upshifting really is no point. I keep it in mind while I am at it!

Just say I am driving 70mph in 6th and suddenly brake while hold clutch in to 20mph. Do I

1) hold clutch + shift to 5th to 4th to 3rd to 2nd and clutch out

2) hold clutch + shift from 6th to 3rd or 2nd and clutch out

3) hold clutch in, shift to 5th, clutch out, clutch in + 4th, cluch out, etc.
or
4) clutch in, nuetural, clutch out, rev match, clutch in, shift to 5,
clutch in, nuetural, clutch out, rev match, clutch in, shift to 4,
.........................etc........

you will have hit the wall or whatever obstacle if you had to stop this suddenly.

i think he means a sudden stop. imagine if a deer came out on the road while you were on the freeway, i wouldn't be going down sequentially to slow down for that sucker. your interior will look like the back of a butcher shop.

but if i was chillin out slowing down, i would do it your way. or if i had "enough" room to do so.

[QUOTE=billmesh,Feb 8 2006, 12:16 PM] In that situation this is what I would personally do...

clutch in, shift to neutral...

Don't give bad info. We just had several threads on why skipping gears is bad. Basically, it wears your synchros a lot faster than normal. There were pictures up and everything.
Reread my post. Just because you can does NOT mean you should. I agree that it's not good...hence my comment.
