Default Vafc question

wondering whats the best point to set Vtec at 5800 instead of the stock 6200 and set rev limiter at 9 k ? just recently purchased a Vafc and have a Hks exhaust thats only mods(engine wise) for now. is this safe and reliable? any help appreciated! Thanks!

Must be altitude if you Vtec kicks in at 6200 rpms. Here in California, it kicks in at 6000 rpms.

I remember when I was Denver, my second turbo would kick in 500 rpms later then in California, this was when I had my FD.

5800 rpms is where I would set it at. Mine is at 5500 but my Vtec comes on at 6000 rpms.

Good luck.

I have my vtec set to 5800 also. You cannot change the 9k redline with the VAFC though. If you are going to set the fuel settings be sure to get it done at a dyno with a wideband senser, as you could cause major engine damage by just using various settings.

how much of a difference do you think it made on your car? do you think it is worth it for a car with little to no engine mods?

Well when I went to get the VAFC tuned at the dyno, I had Injen intake, J's racing exhaust, test pipe, only performance mods. Before tuning began I was putting down 191 to the wheels, and after the tuning was complete it came to 202. So that was a gain of 11 HP. I believe you would benefit with a car with little to no mods, b/c I don't have many engine mods.

Thumbs up

I'm just curious why everyone's setting their VTEC engagement in the high 5K rmp range rather than the low 5K range

I've installed my VAFC2 unit and will not be dyno tuning it until 2 weeks from now. I was planning on having the VTEC kick in at 5200 RMP, beside oil consumption what would I need to worry about if go this route

You don't just pick a number and use it, you have to experiment while tuning. The mods affect where the cross over ends up. A header typically dictates where the cross over is most effect due to the primary size, path, etc.

For example, when we tuned my friends ITR with basic bolt on mods, he had a JDM ITR header. The smoothest cross over point ended up being 5500. He eventually swapped it out for a TODA header. This was a 4-2-1 design (vs 4-1) with larger, stepped primaries. We ended up dropping the cross over all the way down to 4400 with no ill effects.
