Default Value Guides vs. reality

My Berlina Black Red Interior 2002 model with 115,000 miles was stolen from a parking lot located in Birmingham Alabama n December. The retail value from NADA maxes out at $14,000. However, sale listings around the country are in the $18,500 range. That seems like a large variance. Any thoughts?

time to negotiate with your insurance company using facts- show them comps and demand they meet that.

good luck

Autotrader will be you friend. Years ago I was rear-ended by a semi truck in my little BMW 318 Ti. I don't remember the values we were dealing with but they wanted to give me something like $4,000 for my car. I pulled up ad after ad after ad on AT for what they were really selling for. We'll say they were selling for $8,000 because this was like 15 years ago and I don't remember the details.

The insurance company wasn't going for it. I put the ball in their court..."I want to buy another 318, you find me one for $4,000, around the same mileage and year, and forward me the listings please".

I had a check for $8,000 a week later!

I've only had to deal with an insurance company regarding a stolen car just once in my lifetime. As it turned out, I had no problems after showing the insurance company plenty of photos that I had taken of the car not long before it was stolen to help back up my claims of the condition the car was in. Good luck dealing with your insurance company, I hope that it works out as well as possible for you.
