That only makes sense if acronyms are not used i.e. Vehicle Identification Number number. AT machine and VI number sound even more ridiculous either heard or read, IMO.

Like you said, "Don't worry about it!".
That's why you don't say VI Number. You say VIN, which includes the number.

Your example is like saying V Identification Number. Why would you do that?

Hmmm. VIN = Vehicle Identification Number = Vehicle ID Number = VIDN.

Maybe we could say VID Number.

Wait, no that's not right. When you get carded, why do they ask for your ID? They should really just ask for your I when you think about it.

Exactly the point.

VI Number is CORRECT (as claimed above). Buy why say it that way? VI Number is correct only if you are reading VI as "vehicle identification" so when you add "number" it makes sense. When you read VIN, do you solve the acronym in your head so that when someone says "VIN Number" you are hearing a redundant "number"? In common usage, it will be read as "VIN" as if it's a word by itself or in the case of ATM will be read as "A-T-M" (individual letters). When you add "number" or "machine", you are merely confirming that you are, in fact, talking about a number or a machine and not some other VIN or ATM.

What the OP posted was acceptable and is not wrong. If a reader "worries" and take the time to decode the acronym in his head, then adding the "number" or the "machine" will certainly make it wrong. The OP did not post "vehicle identification number number". This was only suggested by the succeeding comments.

Don't sweat it! I read the OP's post and I clearly understand it as did, I believe, the rest of the posters.
