Vortech Experience at the Track
Randy, I know you've done a ton to your car so forgive me if you've addressed this before. Are you still running stock compression? I'm a fellow Vortech owner (thanks to the boys at Evolution) and am considering going with a smaller pulley but don't have much confidence doing it without lowering the compression a little. What are your thoughts?
Thanks

2k1-s2k, yes I am still running on stock internals and nothing changed.
The problem with boosting additionally from Vortech/Comptech kit is that, stock injectors just will not flow enough fuel to meet the demand. So if you intend to boost more, you need to factor in how much additional money you need to invest in helping your fuel delivery. You can also look into adding secondary injectors to meet the fuel delivery once the Vtec kicks in to the red line but no one has done that yet. (this could be very good on centrifugal supercharger like Vortech/Comptech which the boost start builiding as the engine speed rises)
I think retarding timing would be better than lowering compression unless you really intend to boost high like 10+psi. Try increasing boost little at a time than boosting high all at once.
One thing is certain that you will be very happy with mid range gain.
And you can experiment with Vtec point like I have. I have set my Vtec and 4800 and it has been great except loss in gas mileage. On the way to the drag strip which was like almost 2 hours and 30 minutes, I was mostly on Vtec above 5Krpm frequently reving to 8Krpm. I used up 80% of the gas but it was hella fun.
I was very impressed that my car held up and still ran respectable time afterwards.
Durability of this motor is simply amazing.
But like I said, try to step up little at a time and also carefully then you will do very well.

Thanks Randy! Hearing you are still running stock internals makes me feel MUCH better about doing this. You always hear about how these motors are just waiting to go boom...I guess that's not entirely true. I have been considering going the additional injector route and am still undecided on whether to go with a VAFC or the Greddy unit. It's kind of strange though, my car is bone stock other than the Vortech unit and I am constantly getting a check engine light and the code is "engine running too rich" I don't know if any other Vortech owners have experienced that but I've only heard of guys running too lean. Wierd Huh
