VTec Controller Questions

Im just wondering, can someone tell me why people fit a Vtec controller to a standard car?
Isnt the whole point of a vtec controller them to match the Cams to the revs correctly, e.g. putting one on a standard car and changing the Vtec activation point to a lower rev range will just cause the car to loose power until it gets to the rev range the where the cam is most suited.
Shouldnt it be used in conjunction with a 'hotter' so that you can take full advantage of the lift/duration?

Tuney, I can't give you the most precise definition here (I'm sure someone like CDelena or Luis can, however) but in principle what you are saying, albeit in a rather convoluted fashion, is correct.
VTEC changes from one set of cam lobes to another, at optimum rpm, to provide the best performance in that rev range.
In the case of the S2k, from 1k to 6k the standard cam(s) operates. From 6k to 9k, the second set of (hotter) cams operate and provide better high rev breathing.
Taking this to its logical conclusion (which I am know car manufacturers are already working on and will deleiver in the not too distant future) the best of all worlds would be an infinitely variable cam which provides optimum breathing at any given set of revs and throttle position.

I thought there was no real point of having a controller on a standard car.
By the way UK Company Piper Cams have developed a Vtec Hot Road Cam which could be used with a controller as it moves the power curve up in the rev range.

Honda tuned for performance as well as the illusion of performance. You can get a SLIGHTLY better powerband, but the car will not FEEL as fast because it will have a smoother VTEC cross-over (You won't feel the switch as much).
Also, a VAFC also controls the air/fuel ratio at a given rpm. That can be useful in some respects.
