VTEC is overrated

Think racing slicks . They are slick for a reason.

I for one can be counted as loving my abrupt VTEC.
I'm coming from an '87 and a '90 CRX-Si. With the mods I made to them the power delivery was smooth and strong. The S however is not like that at all, the power does come on smooth and strong, but that spike at 6 grand keeps me completely entertained.
As others have indicated, the VTEC is more noticeable at wide open (foot mashed to the floor) throttle, no question about it!

When I hit VTEC it's not a huge jolt but it's a little jump that is definitely noticeable. I've only done it in 2nd and 3rd, though. Hitting it in anything higher is probably not advisable.
