VTEC? Why?

Hi Funnyesq,

I have to ask this question. Why DID you buy the S2000? Was it because you loved the looks of it? Didn't you take a test drive and have the salesperson tell you to stomp it? I am not into the mechanics of what the engine is doing to get the car to haul ass but I am into hauling ass. My suggestion to you is to get on the freeway on a longish on-ramp, and be in 1st at the bottom of the ramp, and then shift into 2nd when you normally would. Then just gas it, hard! DO NOT shift into 3rd until you are at 8,000 rpm or running over the other cars as you get on the freeway. See if that doesn't give you a thrill and let you feel what VTEC is.

I would not reccomend VTEC at higher gears anything higher than 3rd. When VTECing 3rd or higher, you can easilly reach triple digits without relizing as VTEC gives a surge of power. I would try VTEC in first gear from a red light or stop sign. 2nd gear when merging into a highway from an on ramp. I typically VTEC 3rd when downshifting when changing lanes in the highway, it gives the car the boost to get around cars. You need to really let VTEC work, meaning shifitng just as VTEC begins say 6500-7000 will not gives you teh true effect. Delay your shifts to at least 8000 and you can see what everybody raves about.

Ohhh almost forgot to mention, make sure you have three bars before VTECing.

like all cars, carbon buildup from part-throttle use is bad;
Carbon buildup is a thing of the past. With the new technologies of computer-regulated fuel injected engines is just not seen anymore. So if you want to stay below 6000 revs for the life of the car you wouln't hurt anything.
Now again, We all strongly urge you to try going into the VTEC range ocassionally, so that you can appreciate the engineering marvel that the F20C engine is......Don't worry, the engine will take it.

Funny,

Just a little warning... I wouldn't do my first explorations of VTEC on an entrance ramp, as Kyras suggested. Do it in a straight line. The power of the car in VTEC, especially in 1st gear, can break the rear wheels loose and you might not enjoy this until you really get familiar with the car.

Use good judgement and enjoy it!

Oh, and Dan is right... Carbon buildup is a non-issue.

My on-ramps are in straight lines. You are right about not doing it at first on a curve.

Good point, Kyras... Depends on where you live. On and off ramps in MA are anything but straight lines!!!

My feeling is this owner doesn't have a clue as to what he bought. I am curious as to why he/she got the S if they know nothing about the best part of the car?
