You make it sound like an entirely different camshaft. I hope you know it is not. VTEC instead just locks the lobes together so the higher lift & duration lobe actuates the valves instead of the lower profiles lobes.

The cam lobes are always locked together. Its called a camshaft. Its the middle rocker arms that are locked together with the other rocker arms that are pushed down by the lower profile lobes.
