It wasn't the differential, it's the axle...

Our half-shafts are actually pretty big in diameter, although I don't know if they are hollow or what kind of material they are made from.

Considering the similarities of our rear ends to the RX7TT, this might be an interesting anecdote. Adam Saruwatari, who's RX7 has run down well into the 9s (maybe 8's now), used to use stock axles when he was running in the 10s. However, due to the stresses involved, they would monitor the axles very closely for twist. Usually they'd need new axles every event, or sometimes in the middle of an event. They'd basically wind the axles up to the point that if you were to clock the inner and out ends you'd see a significant difference (I don't recall exactly how much, but 45 degrees sticks in my mind).

Fortunately, half-shafts really aren't too tough to make, especially if the CV joint holds up (see if you can get the failed part Wesmaster). If the CV joint is a problem, that would entail more expense. Either way, it ought to be less than $1000/side for a custom solution. I'd start calling around.

I think Mike once commented about SC'ed cars with 18" wheels (which you do not have) will actually snap the axle(s).

If you think you will drive it just as hard, which you probably will not for the first month from paranoia, you'll eventually get on it just as much as you have been. I'd suggest upgraded axles. In driving other cars, I always had a motto - 'if it breaks, upgrade it.'

that's my take. and I hope you can do it yourself, or take it somewhere that can help you out - perhaps the shop where Unicron did his exhaust up on the racks? Anything would be cheaper than the dealership. But if you go with the Honda axles, see how much they would be through handa-accessories.com / TAllen / Trevor.

Wes,

I picked up my Lower Control Arm from HandA Accessories for $160 after my dealer quoted me $251. You could still have it overnighted and probably pay less $$$.

Send an email to Trevor and have him give you the part # and price. Enter that information through this Link to get it in your Shopping Cart.

They quoted me $998 to get a new axle, and have it over-nighted.
overnighted to where? Brazil? Or did that include the labor? I'm showing the left driveshaft listing for $498.95. Our internet price is $358.96

that is #4 in the picture:

Turns out that the quote was for all the work I was having done, which is a lot more than just the axle fix (unrelated items).

I may buy through the web, he quoted me $498 for the part.

Wes,

I'd seriously consider upgrading it too. What did Comptech say about it??

UL - I remember seeing Adam's RX-7 in some video. It was the imports vs. the domestics. Adam has great times off the line. His hole shots were amazing. He was blowing everyone away. He beat every car in the import class and went up against a muscle car that beat everyone in the domestic class. Because of his reaction time, he took a huge lead off the line and was able to hold the muscle car off at the end. After seeing that video, I really wanted to buy a convertible RX-7, but they didn't make them anymore.

When a "handed" thing like that happens, I generally replace both sides. Since the other one has had it's share of the fun. But for a mostly street car you can probably do just the one side. I just hate failures in competition, so you have to be careful about things like this.

Honda installed the SC. This dealership has it's own performance parts department and installation.
