What is AP1 and AP2

AP2 stands for model type and engine.
S2000, F22C1
This is the designation for model and engine from Honda standpoint.

this discussion has been carried out many times.
For the mis-informed "AP*" is not just the chassis code, it is, according to Honda, the chassis/engine designation.
Ask any euro/japanese owner to check the VIN on their 04+ that has the F20C, and they'll be happy to tell you that they have an AP1.
This is a common misconception that I've addressed on numerous occassions.
In summary, AGAIN
All 00-03 = AP1
All Euro/Japanese 04+ with F20C = AP1
All North American 04+ with F22C = AP2

while this may not be outwardly stated, I do believe this number represents the chassis code. remember, the 2.2L S2000 here in the US has a slightly different "chassis" or "setup" (the fine points of which I do not have in front of me) than the rest of the world, hence the AP2 designation. to my knowledge most of the handling/suspension changes our 04+ S2k's have did NOT carry over to the rest of the world.
although I cannot find it now because the search isn't working on my computer, but the official Honda guide to VIN numbers refer to the AP series as "CHASSIS/ENGINE DESIGNATION" -
then lists in the index
AP1 - s2000 with F20C
AP2 - s2000 with F22C
I am 100% sure that if you looked on an 04+ european or japanese s2000, you will most definately see AP1, not AP2

here's the link I was looking for
http://www.collegehillshonda.com/artman/pu...ticle_183.shtml
Even though it doesn't show euro/japanese codes, it clearly shows that the code is not just the chassis, but the associated engine as well.
Note how accords and civics, with similar, if not identical chassis, have different codes because the of the engine they have.

for example, ALL civics have the EM2 chassis, even though their vin may list something different.
so, in other words, we are both right. ap2 in regards to VIN number stands for what the car is and what engine is in it.
however, outside the VIN, AP2 is the actual chassis code.
yes i see what you mean regarding the VIN. it's obvious that the VIN dictates engine and chassis. what's interesting though, is that while the civics, accords (and all the other cars) may have their engine dicated in their VIN, they still run the SAME chassis code if they are on the same platform. (it's just not listed in the VIN)
for example, ALL civics have the EM2 chassis, even though their vin may list something different.

In your example of the civic, an 05, that has a chassis code of ES9 according to that document i posted. Who's to say that its an EM2? Some dude on honda-tech.com?
So you're saying a guy in europe with an f20c equipped 04 is going to call his car an AP2 despite the fact that his VIN says AP1? Just because s2ki says so?
EDIT - I think I found where you are coming from -
in 2003 - EM2 Civic 2-Dr., D17A1, D17A6, D17A2
so you're right, in this case, the EM2 is used for civics with slightly different motors.
then in the same year -
ES1 Civic 4-Dr., D17A1
ES2 Civic 4-Dr., D17A2
ES9 Civic 4-Dr., LDA1
so the 2 door keeps the same code, but the 4 door doesn't. So there is a bit of inconsistancy with code use.
Bottom line is this, and eventually a euro owner will back me up on this - the 04+'s with the f20c is still an AP1 - that's all there is to it.
