what happened to King/Mugen CAI thread????
Bout 10 hours ago, there was a post regarding King supplying a Mugen CAI which had an intake snorkel which did not reach the lower vents.
If I remember correctly, the CAI seemed to be the one used with the Mugen front bumper with the CAI cutout. However, the purchaser was told that it was some sort of new design, "in a wind tunnel".
What happened? Is the truth out there?

The CAI sold by King now is not the one that comes out of the front grill. They said it was redesigned. The "new' redesigned one appears to be the one used for the SS bumper, and the snorkel ends up in the bumper ABOVE the front grill.

I was the one who posted the original thread, and also the one who deleted it. I decided to wait until I contacted Mugen directly in Japan so I would be better informed before posting my opinion. I was going to post another thread, but since this one came up I'll just post it here.
Just to recap the facts:
1.I ordered the Mugen CAI thinking that I was getting the one that I saw on the King Motorsports website.
2.I received the CAI and installed it per instructions (at which point I realized that I couldn't see the snorkel from the front and had to reach up into the bumper to find it).
3.I contacted King via pm that the model # that I received did not match the model # on the website.
4.I received the following response: "What you received is the latest version of the Mugen CAI. Just another example of Mugen's dedication to producing the best product available! Mugen went back to the windtunnel for analysis and found that by placing the snorkel up in the nose they could take advantage of a naturally created high pressure area AND minimize any chance of water intake. They were also able to minimize any extra noise with this design. So there you have it. The original design works perfectly fine, but Mugen wanted to make that design even better. And this is what you have...
5.The model # that I received is listed in the 2001 Mugen catalog under the "aero dynamics" section and is coupled with the Mugen SS front bumper (which has the air duct cutout of the front bumper).
I thought it was strange that Mugen released a "newer" version of the CAI and gave it the same part number of an existing piece, so I decided to call Mugen directly to ask them. The Mugen rep stated that both versions of the CAI performed exactly the same on the stock bumper and decided to discontinue the longer snorkel model and will not be in the newest catalog due out this month (October). I was relieved to learn that, although I didn't get the part that I thought I was getting, I am getting the part that is recommended by Mugen. I can only say that this was all a misunderstanding and the confusion could have been avoided if I had been informed before my purchase.

Thanks, Smccurry for clearing that up. I think the "new" design will also help prevent sand and other particulate stuff from getting into the filter area. I have noticed more of the particulate accumulation in the filter box after I put in the Spoon cai.
