Default What is Honda/Acura trying to hide?

For fun, today I was browsing a database website that offers a listing of recalls and TSB's for many of today's motor vehicles and is searchable by Make, year and model.

I fully expected to find my beloved 2001 S2k to have just a handful of TSBs(if that many) and was going to compare the number with a competitor's car.

Much to my TOTAL surprise I was greeted with the following "pop-up" window containing a notice, the entire contents of which, is copied below:

********/QUOTE/*********

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The American Honda Motor Company, Inc. has requested XXXXXXX.com (the
database name)** restrict access to Acura and Honda repair information by individual consumers.
You will unfortunately not be able to register for access to Acura or Honda
vehicle repair information, technical service bulletins or recalls.

We kindly request that all comments should be directed to:
American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
P. O. Box 2206
700 Van Ness Ave.
Torrance, CA 90501

Honda: 800-999-1009
Acura: 800-382-2238

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused
you.

*******/END QUOTE/*********

** I did not list the database source for concerns about their liability. GBaker

As an electrical engineer for a well known firm, who prides himself on honesty, forthrightness and a smattering of principles, I find that Honda/Acura Corp. seem to go by a somewhat different set of rules.

I really love my car, but after having just given over $30k to Honda/Acura Corp., I somehow don't feel that I really deserve that sort of shabby affront. And neither, I suspect, do all other Honda/Acura owners.

By the way I searched a Toyota model(my wife's car) and found no hint of a blocking message.

You really should tell people the name of the site!

I mean...if they have ALL of that DATA and they are a .COM, shouldn't everyone know about it?!?!?!?!?

It boils down to the $$$ TSB's are not recalls...Therefore these are not mandatory repairs on Honda's part. TSB's are only performed "Free of Charge" during the vehicle's warranty period.

Another factor may be that many auto manufacturers are signing agreements with various other companies to distribute their TSBs. They are then no longer available on the web and also provide a nice secondary income stream for the company (e.g. you can "subscribe" to the TSBs for something like $300/year...)

ALLDATA is the standard source of tech information for independent garages and many dealers. It isn't just one of the many sources. To my knowledge Honda is the only manufacturer doing this.

I agree Honda's approach towards this is frustrating. On one hand we have the most innovative car company out there and one that has the reputation for a quality product but they take an approach that they have something to hide.

Here's what I found the last time I checked the sources shown:
