If you're going all out, wouldn't you replace everything?

Speakers. You can get much better fidelity with better speakers.
However, the stock head unit doesn't have enough power to drive them with clear sound that's loud enough for top-down highway driving. You'll need a new HU/amp for that.

If you're going to replace one thing, replace the stereo, but you'll lose the dash controls. If I were you I'd save an extra couple hundred $ and get a Modify unit and some low-power speakers that an aftermarket HU can properly support.

Its easy to make the stock headunit sound good. Add more power. I swapped my door speakers for some polk audio's and had a local stereo shop wire in a 800 four channel mtx to the stock headunit. They installed some kind of break out box type thing that gives me all kinds of adjustments that the factory unit lacks, but I still get to keep the factory look and controls. It works great, sounds better than the bose in my wifes xc90, and is lound enough to give me a headache at 80 with the top down. I did recently add a 10in subwoofer to mix for a little more thump, but it sounded great without it. I always hated the look of aftermarket headunits in cars because they never really match the interior of the car. This has been a good compromise of stock form and aftermarket function. BTW I probably spent 1000 on everything including the sub and all installation

Buy a mounting bracket, a HU that is HD capable NOT HD ready (I ****** love HD radio) also make sure it has USB connectivity as well as an AUX input you can get a great deal on some JVC HU's for under $200, If you're installing new door speakers get some dynamat it makes a world of difference.

Amp/Sub is pretty huge too, just get a low profile single sub and a dual channel amp just in case
