is the OEM deck bad and the speakers decent?
or are the speakers ok and deck bad?
Both.

I always hated the look of aftermarket headunits in cars because they never really match the interior of the car.
I never get these statements, personally. IMO the stock HU isn't a looker and doesn't really match anything any better than any of the aftermarket head units. I guess YMMV.

The sound quality of the stock speakers will only be so good. Upgrading the HU will only provide more power which doesn't necessarily make it sound any better, but louder. If you upgrade your speakers to a pretty decent set (I'd recommend a set of components) you will notice the difference in sound quality/clarity. Also since you have a MY00 you may want to consider 2 things since you probably only have the 2 coaxial door speakers. 1. Switching to a 02-up door panel that has tweeter pods. 2. Add a set if speakers behind each seat.

Change the radio and the speakers. The factory unit and speakers fail.

Actually, two months ago I asked myself the same question.
I replaced the speakers since the there are no head units that I really like. I upgraded to Polks and noticed that they actually play louder but don't make up for the distorted signal from the factory head unit.

I have the stock MY2000 unit like you and seriously recommend starting with a new HU and then move to speakers.

takeshi - I agree with japhethwar. Stock components usually compliment the car by way of illumination and control peripherals. Perhaps later model year cars have better radios and can get away with just "more power".

did speakers get better in later model years? i had an 00 ap1 that already had a Sony Xplode head unit and i later added a set of $150 Alpine speakers (randomly picked) after one of the stock speaker died. it sounded ok but not great.

i now have a CR with a/c radio. would i need both speakers (doors, tweets, AND roll hoops?) and head unit? i don't listen to music loud very much. i just prefer clarity more. i'd like it to sound like a premium oem sound system found in high end luxury cars.

If you are changing one thing, or both and want to know which to change first - get new speakers. The stock ones are absolute rubbish. The HU drives new speakers quite well if you are not the "big pong" type. Listen to the wind and engine at speed.
