What would you change?
20 more lb/ft of torque
VTEC engagement point 250-500 rpm lower
Normal Analog gauges ..... and more of them (oil, volts etc)
2" more rearward seat travel
Telescoping and tilt adjustable steering
Glass rear window
More compact tonneau cover that you can actually STORE
Non-fold down stereo cover fascia
Better quality carpet
Convertible roof liner?
Aluminum footrest - standard (Sorry Richard!!)
Full width sill/rocker panel protectors
Adjustable intermittent wipers
More functional remote stereo controls
Carpet on lower section of door
That's all!
By the way, did I tell you all that I LOVE MY CAR!!!!
PS...Oh, and how about an all-black interior on a white S2000

1. Door lock unlock button in car
2. Upgraded carpet
3. A real name people can identify with, not S2000
4. 2.8L V six for some torque (would miss up the 50 50 weight though)
5. Auto tonneau (Boxster style)
6. Intermittent wipers speeds X 5 to 8
7. 17" or 18" wheels

this has been done before (will include links below for those interested) but in the spirit of the thing:
I'd like a "club racer" version. No stereo, no air conditioning, no cruise control, manual top (with plastic window), no carpets, manual windows, manual door locks, roll bar, 17" wheels, F1 style paddle shifters (optional), vented brakes (using front bumper vents) with stainless lines, XBrace and beefed up front stabilizer and no cup holder.
In other words, don't turn it into a Boxster, don't turn it into a Z3 and don't turn it into an SLK. Make it MORE S2000!

I have an Australian Spec MY 2000. Here are the things I'd change:
1. Move the headlight washer switch from the transmission console to the dashboard somewhere. I have sprayed my newly washed car and my face too many times already.
2. Analogue Speedometer. I can live with the tachometer but the speedometer looks very cheesy indeed.
3. Accurate fuel gauge. From 4 bars in, the fuel light is gonna come on anytime.
4. Clock.
5. Glovebox.
6. 17/18 inch wheels would be nice but you could do that yourself and either way, you'd have to pay.
7. I like the glass rear window idea but the well containing it would have to be much larger too in order for the piece of glass to be big enough to be useable. I would be happy if it was the same as the Boxster's. The Boxster's windows always seem to be creaseless and scratchless unlike my S2000's.
8. Rear end handling not so nervous and squirmy. Sometimes the rear end seems like it has a life of its own.
9. Cruise control. I know the US models have it but Australia has plenty of long fast roads too.
10. I'm dreaming here but....scratch resistant paint. If someone could invent something like this, they would be instant millionaires.
To answer the original post, the car's most important short comings are things that you would already have in mind in making the purchase. Ie. two seater, little boot space, 2.0 litre 4 and pretty heavy, not much torque at low revs, noisy, etc.
There aren't any really bad surprises when it comes to this car....unless you have transmission grind, #4 cylinder or diff problems....

I'd like (in no order here)
glass rear window
option of the nav system like JDM cars have.
(I know, adds weight, but where do you keep a map?)
more gauges, but notice how most Japanese cars come with few gauges. Seems domestic cars get all the gauges, even if they are a bit vague.
I liked my Vette because you could call up a variety of readings on the D.I.C. Anything from tire pressure to oil pressure and TEMP! With a digital display, that shouldnt be too hard to work out. Just have the line where the odometer is be your display. If you want to see the odo or trip, or oil pressure or temp, etc... I know its still digital, but certainly it would maximize the potential.
Boy, if someone could program our displays like that, it would surely be a hot seller. I mean if a GM truck gets full gauges, why can't something as performance oriented as the S2000 get them?

What with wanting a 5.7 L engine V10, 400 hp, if you want that buy a muscle car. What I love with this car is that it takes real skill to drive, no traction control, or computers aligning the car for you while you drive (Porche), my grandma could could take a corner in a Porche as well as those guys at R&T. My only complain is the digital dash, it should at least be more accurate.
