What'll beat a S2K
The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) classifies cars for its various competition events. For autocrossing, where quick acceleration, braking and cornering are the determinant qualities, they rate the following cars as faster than a S2K: BMW: M3(E46), M5 ('00+), M Coupe and roadster; Corvette C4, C5, ZR-1; Viper; Lotus Esprit turbo; Mazda RX-7('93+); Porsche 911 (996 chassis) ('98), 911 Turbo, 930(2wd). Boxster S, 911 (993 chassis) non-turbo ('95-98); Acura NSX, DeTomaso Pantera, Mangusta; Saleen Mustang, non-SC; Shelby Cobra; Toyota Supra Turbo ("93 1/2+); Ferrari Dino 206, 246; Griffith; TVR. In the same class as a S2000 are: Audi TT (225hp); BMW M3(E30), (E36), Z3 6cyl, Corvette ('63-'82), Camaro SS ('96+); Chrysler?plymouth Prowler; Ferrari 308, 328: Jaguar XKE; Lotus Elan RWD, Esprit, Europa Twin Cam, Renault engine; Maseari Biturbo; Mazda RX-7 Turbo ('87-'91); Mercedes SLK; Morgan Plus 8; Nissan 300ZX Turbo ('90+); Pontiac Firebird WS6 ('96+); Porsche Boxster, 911 non-turbo, Club Sport. 914/6, 928, 944 (16V), 944 Turbo, 968, Carrera 2, Carrera 4 (964 chassis), 356 Carrera 4-cam; Toyota MR-2 Turbo; TVR.
I don't think the S2000 fits in either category. It's not as good as a 911 Turbo, but it sure as hell is better than a Camaro SS!!! Those beasts won't hug the corners anywhere close to an S2000! It'll dominate a Z3 6cyl. I've raced one in an SCCA event and it was no comparison. And the guy driving it had more experience too. And why is a non-Supercharged Saleen Mustang in a different class, I could understand if the supercharged version was, but this list just makes me angry w/SCCA.
Reality bites. If Camaros were doing poorly, as a whole, they'd petition the SCCA to be dropped into a class in which they were competitive, and if S2000s were hotter the SCCA would move them up a class out of B Stock and into A Stock or Showroom Stock. The S2K is a fantastic car but it is beatable.
Having been to a few auto-x's this year, I think they need to move the WRX to B-Stock... and get it out of D-Stock... They are hanging (and/or beating the S2Ks) in the Auto-x's.
The M3 is a great B-Stock competetor (Not the 330hp roadster, which is SS I believe, a good thing IMHO)

WRX SoloX
C5 and Modded LS1 run in the 50's and 51's.
I love it when they tell us that the WRX corners like pigs.
