Default When the Maintainance Light comes on?

My maintanance light just came on and suddenly my gas gauge doesn't seem to work as well......I filled up my tank drove about 7 miles and noticed that my gas gauge was do about an 1/8 of a tank......So I thought it was a fluke,so the next day I topped off my tank and sure enough the same thing happened around the same distance....Is this something built into the computer system to panic owners into taking the car in for service????
The car feels the same and is running fine,is there any explanation for this or has anyone else experienced this?????

Thanks...

The "Maintenance Required" light is triggered by mileage and is a reminder to do routine maintenance. The gas gauge accuracy is another issue seperate from the "Maintenance Required" alert.

You should really read your owners' manual; there's important stuff in there.
