Grab your keys, go to the car, warm her up to 3 bars and then take it to the redline

I definitely let it warm up to 3 bars.

Is it okay to go from 1st or 2nd to 5th or 6th while in VTEC? Sometimes, I'll take it to 8500 just to pass some cars and then once I hit around 50-60 (which is pretty damn soon) I feel it's pointless to shift to 4 gears to the gear you want to go to bring the revs to around 3-4k rpms. I feel it's using the clutch more and would be better to disengage the clutch once and skip 4 gears and go to a much higher gear and then just cruise!

IMO, if you let the revs fall before engaging the higher gear you should be okay, but if you change immediately you will end up slipping the clutch to allow the revs to mate with the gear that you have selected .....

I used to have a dodge conquest. I would sometimes go from 1st to 3rd or from 2nd to fourth. If I reved 1st gear all the way up, I would skip 2nd altogether, because I was at a desired speed. I would make sure that the revs were just right, so when I engaged 3rd gear, the engine speed would match the wheel speed. No clutch wear. Although the speed limit was 35 mph, I had fun doing it.

wait atleast 5 more minutes after you get 3 bars on the temp gauge before you engage vtec, this is to ensure that the oil is at operating temps too. oil takes longer to warm up than coolant.

but hey its your car, if you want to vtec it the second you get 3 bars, then be my guest.

5 minutes? I wish the car came with an oil temp gauge. It takes me about 3 minutes to get from my garage to the Autobahn, and I normally wait another 7 minutes revving just under 6000 (180kmh) before I let loose!

Hmm, do mineral oils warm up slower than synthetics? Does a 10W-40 take less time than say, 10W-60?

Yea I usually do that. My 1st to 5th shift is a lot slower than my 1st to 2nd shift if I want to really accelerate. By the time I shift to 5th and engage the clutch again, I am already in the low rpms (not idle but low).
