Where do you put your left heel?
Well I've just come back from a top down run in red woolly hat mode!!
It's damned cold today, so it was a little er... bracing!
Well I've paid attention to what I do today, and it just goes to show we do some things so automatically we're not really aware of what we do! Seating position is going to play a big part in this for different people. I'm 5' 11" and I have the seat fairly well back. If I go any further back with the seat than my usual position, the back of my leg actually touches the cross member when I depress the clutch. I then adjust the rake of the seat back so that my arms aren't too straight and not too bent when on the steering wheel. My normal hand position is 10 to 2 or 1/4 to 3.
As I said in, normal driving, my heel pivots between the clutch and dead pedal with no problems.
Starting from stationary, it's actually different. I raise my left foot completely, placing the ball of my foot on the clutch pedal and depress it fully. Having engaged first gear, I apply a few revs with the throttle, and then start to raise my foot smoothly off the pedal until it's engaged. This is accomplished as a sort of cantilever movement using the whole of my leg which operates against the resistance of my butt at one end and the clutch pedal at the other. It actually allows for very smooth engagement.
Once moving I revert to the heel stays on the floor method. By the way Jimmy my feet are size 9 1/2. Andy Pandy's a real big feller.
I see he takes size 12's. You know what they say about blokes with big feet!

I am so tempted to comment, but I won't
O.K. having been out for a spin today I spent a lot of time observing how I drive. I have found I have two different styles depending on how fast I am driving.
At low speeds I use the base of my foot to pivot between the clutch and the dead pedal. This gives me better finite control and therefore a smoother driving style.
When I am driving at speed I tend to use my whole leg to depress the clutch as a faster action is called for. These two styles give me the control I need to drive the car smoothly and safely.
Hope this helps.
