For those who do your own oil change, how do you dispose of your used oil/oil filter??

I never change my oil with a lift. I have one of those all in one pans that catches the oil, drains it in an enclosed area that can be capped off. I simply set the pan on the ground, slide it under the car, set a blanket over the front of the car where I lean on it, remove the oil filter, and pull out the drain bolt from the top of the car. I reach in beside the left side of the engine to the bottom of the car (P.S. it is easier to do if you remove the oil filter first). It is really not difficult.

Removing the oil filter is easy as it is on side of the block.

Takes me about 10 minutes.

I pull up to my Honda dealer every 3,000 miles and let them do it. I simply do not have the time, nor do I really want to do it. I've done it five times now, they know me and I know the mechanic who works on my car. I'm in and out in half-hour.

I take it up to the local Shell station and dump it in their well. Almost any gas station, which also serves as a true service station with engine bays for oil changes, will have a well under ground for housing their disposed oil. There is also usually a trash can specifically devoted to used oil filters for throwing that away. Basically, since I don't want to mess with asking anyone, I go up there anytime after dinner when the service portion is closed and dump it. There should be a hole in the ground with a relatively thick metal lid covering it. You just move the lid aside and pour away.

There should also be oil disposal sites near where you live, you just have to research and find them. I just go to the Shell because it's two minutes from the house.

Whether it be a new clutch.. a new crossmember.. a new anything.. if something needs to be done.. I will learn what I must and endure what I have to to get it done myself. NEVER will I bring my car somewhere to get ANYTHING done..

Once somebody else touches my car it feels like it's not mine anymore.. Like if somebody was to have sex with your wife... of the VERY VERY VERY few people I let drive my car.. they are not allowed to go WOT on it..

and yes im slightly pyschotic about my car...

Change myself (ever since my parents weaned me...) Er... {grin}

Let's see, it costs less and takes less time to do it myself.

Why spend 30 minutes at the dealer or equivalent when doing it yourself takes less time (and an equal number of trips)???

On the disposal question, the city tranfer station collects used oil no charge. It's very illegal to dump it elsewhere and service stations charge since they have to pay for disposal.

Randy

PS: I also prefer having the greater knowledge of my car, monitor oil consuption, etc.

I have dumped oil at several Walmarts, without being charged.

Do it myself. I enjoy tooling on the car and changing the oil is anything but complicated or time consuming. Also, I have the added luxury of knowing it was done right by someone who actually cares about doing it right.

My township collects oil and filters at a grade school campus, along with it's yearly hazardous waste drive the first week of June.
