I spent last Sunday test driving an 04' demo with 170+ miles down most of my favorite roads. Afterwards, I hopped in my 2002 then took the same roads. This morning I did some AP1 vs AP2 runs and filming for the Temple of VTEC... This is my resolve.

The 2.2 is different, ho hum different. Slighty quicker... More refined. Not as fun... As much as I want to get a new S2000... I want one with the F20C. As far as stock cars go, there is absolutley nothing like it in the world. Once I was back in my car and began to twist roads and corners, the happiness and joy that raced through my veins was priceless. What an amzing little car...

I would suggest to those that have an F20C, get a set of 04 wheels to eliminate the twitchiness of the car... and Oh Boy- Go have the time of your life.

VRaaaAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Drove both and the 9K redline was exciting, but the '04 engine is more tractable, and the VTEC is on the same number of rpms - in the "03 and earlier it came on at 7000 - 9000. With the new car it is 6000-8000. The powerbands are different and the '04 engine has dynoed at more HP, and more torque than advertised.
??? I own a 00 and my vtec engages right at 6k

00-03 is the OG of S2000,just reminds me of the DC2 Type R vs DC5 Type R,DC5 is faster and more refined has more options but compared against the DC2 ITR the new Type R lost its raw, edgy, high strung appeal..but its still a Type R..same thing goes with an S2000 04 Model seems to have a lil bit more creature comfort than the 00-03 Generation..people claim its faster, engine response is more civilize and much more suitable for daily driving, some may like the previous models reckless approach with its 9K rpm redline.Either one is good ,It always boils down to personal preference but regardless of the year any S2000 is a terrfic car,Lets just be happy that our S2k is Evolving..

More like every day, or at least so it seems.

I've driven both and ended up with an 04. Read into that what you will.

I've driven both on several occasions. Let's just say I'm happy with my '02.

My recollection was that the VTEC came on at 7000 in the earlier car - I may be wrong. Guess it really boils down to personal preference - the 9000 RPM redline might be just great if you live out in the country. Living in an urban/suburban locale, I appreciate the added torque in the 300-5000 range, and if I have to give up some RPMs, so be it. They did not turn the '04 into a diesel

The redline was 5500 RPM on my '65 Corsa, '68 Camaro(althought it WOULD rev to 6700), and my '70 XKE - the additional 2500 RPM is gravy for me!!

I do not want to start a flame war, but pre 04 is more fun to drive IMHO. The pre 04 just feels more raw. But that is just my opinion.

I would agree that more raw is a good description

I have driven both side by side and switched cars back and forth on an airport runway. There are a lot of differences. Overall the 04 is without question quicker. In fact it walked away from my 02 and a heavily modded 01. Acceleration runs were done without clutch drops since all involved like their cars. However even with a rolling start in VTec the 04 was quicker. There was really no point in the power band where my 02 pulled harder. If I did not have a 98 BMW M Roadster (So cheap I could not resist the purchase) I would trade up for an 04. As an added note the M Roadster also rated at 240HP is quicker then any of the S2k's.
