i have the 8500 and it's saved me a couple of times. i still got a ticket with it once. i've been thinking of upgrading to the V1 in the future. i really like the directional arrows and the radar counter.

Example....

You take the same route to work every day. Your Passport falses at the same spot every day(maybe near a shopping mall automatic door or a security system). As you pass one day, there may be a police radar at this same spot shooting you and you would not even know it. If you are used to the radar detector going off there, you may not slow down and you are nailed.

Passport 8500, hard wired with remote display and mute switch ($15 option). Clean and uncluttered installation. From what I;ve read, hard wiring the V1 is a bit more trickey and there is no option for a remote mute. The only band that the V1 beats Passport is "X", which police hardly use anymore. The "arrow" indicator seems like a great feature. Haven't been tagged with the Passport (many years in multiple vehicles), but you still have to be very careful where you choose your spots for "spiritied" driving.

There is a remote display available for the V1. And it has a mute
button on it. I have been using this set up and I have no issues
with it's performance. Has saved me many times.

But no matter what you have, instant on will get you if you are the only car on the road.

Basically you're going to have to choose between the V1 and 8500. You'll get thumbs up on both from most people. Just pick one and go with it.

I choose the 8500 because of availability...I like to buy and drive. I like the fact that I can turn off the X-band completely and not deal with all of the false alarms. I also like the expert mode indicator option. Again, you really can't go wrong with either. I know a lot of people that have both and they all swear by what they bought.

One other nice feature of the 8500 is the voltmeter function. I have mine set to show voltage when there isn't a radar signal, so it's like have a voltmeter hooked up.
