Who has a V1 radar detector and does it really work?
The case from Alaska confirms what I said about visual estimation. Anyone who wants to avoid tickets had best learn something about police procedure. About this I was absolutely correct. Where are all the voices saying there's no need to visually estimate speeds now? Cutuesday was challenging me on my claims regaring the need to visually estimate. No radar detector will help you if the cop uses instant on and you don't know enough to challenge him on procedures.
I have done extensive searches of case law and statutes, but Lexus does not reveal lower level cases. So it is true that some municipalities are attempting to use photo radar. I've consulted with some of my associates in other States. California tried to put this into statute but failed. Arizona tried to limit such enforcement to situations where the residents had voted for it, but this failed. A good source on this is http://sense.bc.ca/ though they don't have the requirement of visual estimation or the due process rights that we have.
If challenged, these municipal tickets should easilly be dispatched as in the Alaska case.
In most States all tickets are civil infractions. What they are trying to do in these municipalities is make them non moving violations, and yet still take your license if you don't pay. A U.S. supreme court case called Bell, however, says that if your license is threatened that you are entitled to full due process rights.

I think the biggest difference over my previous cheap-o detectors is K and Ka band sensitivity, which is really what counts at least here in CA. I mean it's just orders of magnitude more sensitive. The MT test, while you can argue about the details, clearly shows a big gap between the cheap detectors and the serious ones.
I also find the directional arrows and bogey counters extremely useful. For example when you drive by a K-mart and get 4 K band alerts you can pretty much tell that's how many automatic doors they have. Obviously it picks up falses around town, but it's not too bad in Big L, and I rarely use it around town anyway- most useful on the interstate.
Another thing I like is the company policies are in line with the price. V1 comes with all mounts, coiled cord, hardwire kit, extra suction cups. Extra parts from Valentine are cheap- like $1 for a couple sets of suction cups with no shipping charge- just shows you pay a lot up front but they don't nickle and dime you to death post-purchase. After warranty is up repair cost is fixed rate- neat.
And I'm not sure why the magazines complain about the size- the case is actually a lot shorter than the 8500, only the face is large. Anyway, I love it I love it I love it!
