At this point, only 9 votes, but 7 are once a week or month!!! BTW I'm in the never category.

Can someone explain to me what exactly a grind is. Is it when you shift and the gear does not go into the gate and thus you are shifting from a gear into neutral????

When my wife is home we grind every chance we get. Not that it's any of your business.

So what exactly causes the frind. Is it releasing the clutch too early and shifting after the clutch is released (something like that)???

That's one cause. Or just not having the gear completely in and releasing the clutch.

You'll know when you grind. Take a comb and run it across the edge of a table and there you have it. It can be a bunch of things.

1) clutch not all the way depressed
2) shifter doesn't have enought leftward pressure
3) synchros are shot - a lot of 00' 01' have TSBs on the grind prob.
4) reaching the 1st indent, not getting through and then trying to get it in.

Something out of the blue and makes you lose confidence in the car

Hmm, I had only one incident where I heard a grind on my new '03.

Going down a driveway from a stop, I had the clutch on the floor and put it in first. When I let up on the clutch and depressed the gas, the car went nowhere and the RPM's jumped. I put my hand on the shifter (it sure looked like it was in first) and on the slightest pressure, grind away...

I actually had to shift out of first and back in before it would finally engage.

Dunno if this is the problem, I tend to blame it on me more than anything else.

I get the 'occasional' 1-2 grind - either from a redline 1st shift or a stupid, at-fault, lazy half-clutch on my part.

And just like H22a4 said - it makes you lose a bit of confidence in your car.
