Why does the car burn oil during the break in??
I have been diligent in monitoring the oil level in my car since I purchased it last month.. There was no change in oil level from zero to 2500. However, I am down a quart at 2700 miles. I don't V-TEC often and drive sensibly. Can anyone tell me why the car uses oil during the break in and just how long the break in period is? Further, why would the car all of a sudden get thirsty?
Thanks

Me too! but instead i do v-tec often and i only have 700 miles. i checked the level the other day and as you can see on the post below that i cause a havoc! well i ened up going the dealership and they added some oil to it and now it is full. BTW i only had like one X above the L mark. like you i also want to know why the break in period uses a lot of oil?

[QUOTE]Dear Tom and Ray: I have a significant mystery on my hands. I installed a completely rebuilt 500-cubic-inch (1975) Cadillac engine in my 1981 GMC Suburban. I then towed a travel trailer 11,500 miles and it used a quart of oil every 300 miles. I'm not leaking any oil. The Suburban does not smoke on start-up or during normal driving. A compression and leak-down test was performed and the results were normal. The PVC valve was replaced.
The good news for the guy with the Suburban is that he has a total-loss lubrication system. This means he needs to change his filter from time to time, but he will never have to change his oil! It doesn't stay in there long enough to get used up. So for a couple bucks a month spent on oil he saves himself some trouble.
Of course, I'd guess his truck doesn't do so well with emissions testing...
