Default Why does the ram air must be so expensive?

Hi.
I just wonder,The only mod I want to do with the air duct is to get a ram air.
Why does it have to be out of carbon fiber or ???
Why cant it be out of old fashion plastic?
And why do I have to pay 250,350$$ for a piece of sh.. like that when it needs to be 10 or 5$.At most. Its only for air. not a moving part to my knowledge.
If there is something out of plastic and reasonable with the price post me a link here or explain why it has to be so expensive and from carbon fiber?
Thanks a lot.
STEFCE.

I made my own with a 3" pipe and a K&n filter at first. I think you loose some power but it sounds great.

What are you talking about? I am sure something is lost in the translation. But, if you think a quality CAI should cost $5 or $10 then you should know how to make it cost $5 or $10. Filters alone cost $20 to $50. If you want to make a "ram air" from the stock intake box. You need to do some serious tinkering and modifying. Nothing is cheap, if you have the know how and abilities then you can obviously create something yourself for less. But companies have costs (marketing, R&D, etc) you can't expect something for nothing.

BTW, did you ever think that plastic in a hot engine bay might not be the best idea?

No new filters no nothing, just that plastic thing that goes out the stock airbox and goes in the opening of the front grille.
Understand?
And the airbox is made of plastic and doesnt melt does it?
Thanks again.

He's talking about something like the spoon, ID air ducts, or Aus2000 which cost about $350 each. I agree that their price is pretty high for such a small piece of CF (or fiberglass in aus2000 case). That's the reason why I didn't go that route, you can go CAI for 1/2 the price.

The following pics are of my initial "home made" snorkel. I never finished the project as I was actually doing something else at the time. That's why the pics do not center on the snorkel. I later got the IDI snorkel. Although I proved that there was some ram air effect, I also concluded that any such effect would be minimal under speeds of 80 mph.
This is your $5.00 - $10.00 ram air system. It's made from flexible heating duct. All you need to do is complete the connection between the top of the duct that you see and the intake horn. IT WAS UGLY AS SHIT!

Well here's my point, if you want something that's $5 to $10 go make it yourself. But don't expect it to be the prettiest thing or even the most effective. If you expect a manufacturer to do it, you are just not taking into account all the things I listed before.

I wasn't talking about melting I was talking about cooling. But I also thought you meant a CAI and not a snorkel. Either way $5 to $10 just doesn't buy you much these days.
