Why does the ram air must be so expensive?
The Aus AIE is hand made out of fibre glass then painted. It is an expensive manufacturing process.
It is much cheaper popping plastic parts out of a mould. But first you've gotta make the mould. Probably $10,000 for the tooling.
The market just isn't big enough to justify this sort of investment.
So if you can find me 2,000 orders I'll knock 'em up for $10 bucks each. Until then, insulated duct is your best option.

During the height of my PRM-modifying days last summer a friend noted to me that for a $35K (mods, etc), I had an engine bay that looked like a freakin' rally car (ducting, Home Depot piping and wraps out the yin-yang, etc). I decided that to get any benefit out of all the ducts, air flow directors, etc I had to go about 75mph...otherwise, any benefits were almost indecipherable. So, with the exception of piping in the wheel well snaking up just forward of the PRM horn, I got rid of it all and now my engine bay looks respectable again. Duct tape and toilet tubes have no place in the engine bay of this sportscar. My .02
Haven't you noticed that EVERYTHING for our cars cost too much? Go price a rear-end gear change for a Mustang versus the two options for us and you'll drop dead of sticker shock. $5-10 is unrealistic but $80 to $120 sounds better than $200+.
And don't be knocking plastic in the engine bay. There's all sorts of high temperature plastics that kick metal @ss with regard to weight, corrosion, and/or cost (e.g. a tight tolerance complex molding like sensor housings).

I was working on a way to justify paying $150 for a CAI kit, but then came across one on Ebay for $60 (including shipping) and am real happy with it. It's chromed aluminum and came with everything needed to install.
I bet the $150 kits from AEM, etc. are better quality, but this looks good and get's the job done.
Here a current listing for the kit I bought:

Well turbo_pwr says iyou cant buy anything for 5-10$$
But on e bay you have a two piece CAI for 25$+shipping.
And there is filter and pipes of alu and so so on.Hoses and...
Why not a clear 5$ for a stupid plastic thing??
I accept the fact you have to have a mold for it and it costs.
Thants ok for not to have one.
But you dont have to be stupid not to understand that somebody is makeing a ton of $$ on you.
Its a simple mod i am talking aboud,no R&D no nothing just the right angle and plain old fashion work.
Thanks all.
I hope no offence taken.

The argument for a $10 plastic part seems to make sense on the surface. However, I'm sure it is a lot easier to cover expenses and make a profit when you sell 1,000,000 plastic letter openers, than it is when you're only selling 100 air ducts into a market for a car that only sells 9,000 units per year in the US.
The Ford Mustang market is considerably bigger than the S2000 market. I don't like the prices either, but you can't say that it's ALL gouging.
