Why doesn't anyone manufacture the clear corner insert for our headlights??

No promises
I am going to be working on this idea in about a month when I pull out the orange reflector in my car's lights. I was hoping that no one would mention it before I got to try the idea but no biggie. I had the idea awhile back: If a piece of plastic comes out why can't a clear one be put in its place?
We'll see.

well, if I wanted to I can make an RTV silicon mold of the piece and cast it out of a clear resin. Ican mix a bit of color to it as well. I am looking at 3days of work and will probably pull out about 20 piece from one mold before it wears down. If people are willing to pay $220 obo for a set, i might think about it. The one thing I'll need is a set of existing lenz you guys have taken away. (amber ones so i can make a mold) I haven't taken mine out yet cuz don't have the time right now but if anyone lives around me with a set sitting around, leave msg at 323-258-8160. young kim

ps. i will have to take a look at the lenz and see if there aren't any major under cuts, but i don't think it will be a problem since i am using silicon mold...

so guys let me know what you guys think and if you are serious, let me know.

This has been looked at way in-depth before, even so far as making a mock-up mold, can't find the thread just now, but the person/s found it to be non-cost effective. I'd pay $100 for clear corners in a heartbeat, but I'm not sure I'd do it because of taking the stock housings apart, I've just never been happy with the un-glue and re-glue scenario, something just tells me there will be sealing problems in the future...but I haven't done it or seen it done so it's just instinct.

Your thoughts on "soft tooling" are in the right line Kim. Unfortunately the small pyramids in the bezel section prevent a soft mold alternative (IMHO). I looked at a soft mold using a Lexan or Acrylic material. The small pyramids on the upper side of the ridges are the hang up. In short a two part die is required. This will run...yes into the tens of thousands of dollars. Trust me....... I have 23 injection molding machines at my disposal . If it could be done I'd do it....silicone soft tool or otherwise I'd do it.

Utah

P.S. If you figure out a pattern I can inject it.

I knew there had to be someone on this board who knew something about injection molding. Most of the parts I design are machined or made from sheet metal. We usually don't make enough of one part for it to be worth it to have tooling built and mold it... oh, with the exception of the DRAMs and SRAMs we manufacture, pretty much every single one of those is encapsulated in an injection molding process.

Two things:
First, do we think Honda makes those clear pieces?

I don't remember what the corner pieces look like offhand, but are the pyramids your talking about the thousands of sub-millimeter relfecting pits in the lens? If so, and those are a problem, can we just smooth out those areas for the final mold? I'd be willing to clear my lenses this way if I could put a clear replacement in there....I'm only worried about the rough shape and look being correct, I could care less if it reflects the light in 10 million dircetions.
