At least two of us on this board are getting a new "short block" because of #4 cylinder failing. Jason Saini's is done and he has 550 miles on the repaired engine. My parts are ordered and I should be rolling in 7 to 21 days.

We all know that the first recommended oil change is at 7,000 miles and that the original oil is special. Also, no special oil is available to the dealer or mechanic doing the short block replacement.

Chris Delena hypothesized the following in a previous thread about my engine's failure:

Got an interesting Email from my friends at Honda Japan (not AHM). It seams the thread is partly right. Molybdenum Disulfide is the primary additive and is mostly introduced in assembly. Other trace elements are added but are not necessary. New engines have small raised surfaces (microscopic) prior to break in. With adequate lubrication the high spots are "forged" back into the parent material. Inadequate lubrication (i.e. straight oil, no moly or trace elements) may get hot, leading to a softening rather then a reforging of the high spots. This in turn can lead to premature wear. He also pointed out that it is in Honda's interest to "over-break-in" the motor (and gearboxes) to minimize failure but that process reduces long term mechanical life. When I emailed back to ask if that meant an earlier then recommended change might increase engine life he said "I won't go there"?

No oil change until 7k miles. My dealer said change at 3750 but no earlier than 3000. They even put in a static window sticker in the car to that effect. i changed the oil at about 3500. I've got 9100 on the car now. About 2500 miles with the sc and no problems. Was I misinformed about the first oil change?

Hi Barry,
If you are concern about having a Moly additive, I think at one time or another I have seen small cans of this in automotive stores. I would check with Honda for its application.
