Why is the Rx8 so much cheaper than S2k?

The RX-8 was never meant to be a replacement for the FD and even Mazda clearly stated this. The RX-8 was meant to appeal more to the masses and is pretty affordable, unlike the FD.

If the RX-8 "drives like a piece of crap and the transmission feels extremely loose," then I don't know what to say... The RX-8 is probably one of the more closer cars today to "feel" a little bit like an S2000. The transmission may not be as good as the S2K but its 95% there. And the S2K and RX-8 transmission feel is probably better than 99% of the cars out on the road.

Personally, I'm glad more fun and affordable RWD cars are being made!

I think it looks ok modded or stock. Though the S2k is sexier modded or stock.

Though I'd give both up for this. My friend just bought one. Lucky b*st**d.

"Ugly" is in the eyes of the beholder (well, except for the AMC Pacer, which was ugly by any standards). It is more of a reflection on the poster than it is on the car when some idiot calls the RX-8 "ugly." You can reasonably say, "I don't like its looks." But to pronounce it "ugly" as if you're the ultimate arbiter of automotive beauty is both arrogant and ultimately stupid.

So then I guess I am wrong for having an opinion alright then. I never said I was " THE ultimate arbiter" I was providing my opinion and my opinion is that the styling of the RX-8 is ugly. Are you the ultimate arbiter to the AMC Pacer? You called that ugly. Anyways I'm not trying to get into any argument because frankly arguing over a computer is ridiculous I just don't appreciate you calling me stupid for my opinion. I never called anyone stupid for there opinion. Thanks everyone have a good day

No where did I say the S2k is "Gods gift" to anything! Get a grip man.

I was actually shopping for one and have seat time in them as well because 3 of my friends own them and turned me on to it. I even got to flog one around at the Mazda Rev it Up event in DC back in 03 and there are many positives to take away from this car, some of which have already been mentioned.

Go to the RX-8 forums and look at some the complaints and issues from the owners. Especially the early MY's. Now I know that internet forums do not represent a total demographic but look at some of the section on their forums regarding technical issues and you will see what I am talking about.

I could post links if you like.

You made it sound like I dont like the car and I do now here is a question:

Which car do you think would have a better chance of making it to 100k miles with less emphasis put on mechanical issues? AND BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF!

Now what I was looking for when I made my car purchase was something sport, quick, handled good and would last for 100,000 miles with minor maintenance cost for under 30 grand.

Checkmate S2k.
That was mainly directed towards mitsukillin and lsb... not you. Our own area is filled with complaints of trans issues, rear diff problems, widow regulators and various other problems no car is perfect.

Yes. But I do have lots of company.

I didn't. I called it stupid that you stated it as an absolute ("It was ugly"), when in fact it's just your opinion. If you want to state an opinion, do so ("I think it's ugly" would suffice; "It's ugly" doesn't). If you state an absolute, you're not stating an opinion. When you state an absolute about a highly subjective matter like appearance of a car, that's stupid (well, with the exception of the Pacer, which is objectively ugly).

Does that clarify it for you?

[QUOTE]
The numbers aren't a huge difference but the RX-8 IMO is one of the ugliest cars ever made. That makes all the difference in the world to me.
Looks like that was my opinion

Just out of curiosity do you have nothing else to do but bicker over 2 words. My statement just stated my opinion. I can't believe this is happening on this site. Everyone else on here has been extremely nice helpful and open to opinions. Just unbelievable thats all, you are just like my sister you have to have the last word and IMO ( in my opinion) thats pretty damn annoying. With that statement I am done with this thread. I mad my opinion clear i'm sticking to it and i'm tired of being called out on it. Is that clear?

I understand what you are saying but the ratio of s2k owners to RX-8 owners with problems i.e. engine recalls and so on, is not even close!

I can almost guarantee an S2k is less likely to go to the shop with drivetrain/engine issues than the Rx-8.

This is coming from RX-8 owners so you know that I am not talking out of my third point of contact.

MSRP:
RX-8 Sport - $27,070
RX-8 Touring - $30,170
RX-8 Grand Touring - $31,750
RX-8 GT automatic - $32,450
S2000 - $34,300
S2000 CR - $36,300
S2000 CR w/ AC+radio - $37,300

So the price difference ranges from $1,850 up to $10,230.

Perhaps Mazda souces less expensive hardware (switches, knobs, sensors, seats, etc.) Perhaps they use less aluminum. Perhaps they share more parts with other Mazda vehicles. Perhaps they use less hands-on labor during assembly. Perhaps they have less margin when selling to dealers. Perhaps the rotory engine uses fewer parts.

I have my doubts that Mazda said "Well, it burns more oil that the S2000, therefore we must price it two grand less." That's a perfectly valid answer to why somebody might not LIKE the RX-8, but it says nothing about why it costs less. (Unless we're talking about used market price, rather than MSRP?)
