You are 100% right, the debate will go on forever, well almost, it seems if there is ever an AP3 Hondawill have clearly dumbed it down so much that this would be true.

So you're wanting to find out WHY the engineers changed the AP2 the way they did? What does that have to do with which version is "better"? I've owned both and I prefer the AP1, and I don't give a squat about why it was changed. 
(Here's a fun tidbit - back in 2001, a group of us went to Japan for a week to meet some of the S2000 owners there and tour various Honda sites, including the Tochigi factory. While at Twin Ring Motegi, we had a little question-and-answer session with the designer of the S2000. [I can't remember his name.] One of our folks, Sondra, asked him why Honda produced such a high-revving engine when the US market prefers large, high torque engines.)
