so going down a massive hill at 5k rpm 60 mph, no throttle uses no gas?
not a drop . but at 5k rpm @ 60MPH, you should shift to 6th gear

Since the day of OBD in the late 80's, Automatic Trans use no gas for coasting in gear and use some gas in neutral. '92 BMW 735 iL has trip computer and I tried coasting with both in gear and neutral, gas mileage shoot to maximum 99 mpg in gear and low 40's in neutral at 60 mph and high 30's at 40 mph.

Any car with a multi-function computer (most German products) will show:

Coasting in gear -- no gas MT or AT
Coasting in neutral -- uses gas just like idling at a red light

so when you let the car wind down in gear foot off the clutch and the car's making that loud winding down noise it's not using gas? I always thought you save gas by throwing it neutral and coasting?

All cars with OBD or OBD2 use no fuel for coasting in gear with feet off gas (and clutch) pedal, after it reach operating temperature. For cold engines, it uses gas as it is idle.

Try this, start your car in the morning then shift to gear (first or reverse) and drive your car without using gas pedal, your car will move at very rapid pace, upto 10 mph in either first or reverse.

I dunno, you would probably want some resistance from engine braking if you're going down said massive hill

No gas is used in this scenario.

The only time my car is not in gear is when I am stopped at a light.

I can honestly say that I didn't know this. It is really rare that I find some fact like this that I haven't heard before, but I am stoked to say that I learned something new today.

what about the gas used in rev matching when you downshift? what uses more? that or coasting in neutral?
