easiest way for the dealer/OEM to confirm an exterior issue is to run a ball point pen along the exterior crack. if they encounter a bump then the "bump" points to an exterior chip that caused the crack.

run a ball point pen along your exterior crack and make sure there is no "bump"/ chip.
