I think that guests are an integral part of this site, but I think if you plan on using the site extensively for information, meets, etc. then 20 bucks is hardly a king's ransom to contribute. Oh, and bump this thread.

This is a useful thread for the consciousness-raising it's doing. I just discovered, for example, that a Gold Member upgrade is pro-rated to how much year you have left on your original (regular) membership. Good going, cthree! Now, if there's a reminder of some kind (and automating this ought to be easy via PM, given the upgrade calculation), I'll renew on time. And I really didn't know that memberships were such a significant revenue stream -- I had assumed the ads were dominant in that regard.

I'm on the side of keeping the Guests around, if only for their contributions to whatever advertising revenue there is. (Presumably, the ads are charged on some kind of viewership basis, and Guests would help that.)

But there could be incentives -- like, only plain vanilla signatures (or none) for Guests. No badges. And, say, how about all Guest posts in a really cute font color?

Like most such sites, this one has its trolls and other lowlifes, but that's the way these things are. The on-line equivalent of shunning is a pretty effective tool to deal with this and, unlike some sites, the wonderful "Ignore" button we have here is quite helpful, too.

So, if nothing else, this will bump this thread, and maybe it'll get noticed by others who need to join.

Ante up, folks! HPH

Xviper's appealing to me...

I thought this thread was going to be about sexy torque wrenches, or that funky, mustachioed baby... Boy was I wrong.

p.s./ Seriously folks, get your memberships. And folks who want to remain guests, fine, but don't expect unlimited privileges (I'm sure that will be changing).

..and when he said the site was slow, I thought he was going to talk "boring".

But new servers would be good. HPH
