About 7 years ago i was picking up some parts at the local dealer with a freind. We were talking about putting cam gears on his type-r while waiting for the parts guy to look up all the part numbers. So a mechanic walks in and over hears our conversation and starts telling us how and why the cam gears make power. He told me the secret is using a smaller cam gear so it spins the cams faster, the faster the cams spin the more air will go into the motor. I began to debate with him about the postion adjustment being the key to its function. He went on to tell me he has been a mechanic for almost 20 years and knows a lot more about these motors than i ever will. I ended up agreeing with him just to end the conversation.
HOLY CRAP. This is the scariest thing I have ever heard. To imagine this idiot actually gets paid to work on peoples cars. People wonder why I rarely let people work on the S. Other than alignments all work is done by yours truely.

Smaller cam gears?

Cams spinning faster?

I would not have been able to control myself. I would have called him an idiot and made sure any of his co-workers that weren't as stupid as he was know what he said, lol

I seriously would have looked around for another mechanic until I found one that could not only back me up, but destroy that guys reputation at the dealer for forever. That is horrible.

I have an easy and possibly lucrative solution to this.

One time this guy was going on and on about z32's [90-96 in the states nissan 300zx]. A friend of mine who has learned some about the cars while I owned them said something that contraticted him, which was correct.

I was just chilling, had nothing to do with the conversation. What do I care about what people bs about. The guy says my friend got bad information, friend says he got it from a friend that owned one and knows them very well, the guy proceeds to indirectly call me a moron.

Not surprisingly, we get into it over how the autos have 20hp less than the manuals. How stupid is that? Anyhow, the DO have 20hp less. He keeps going on and on until he basically called me a liar to my face.

I told him pokerfaced w/o blinking I have $1,000 saying it has less horsepower, and we can call nissan USA on my cell phone RIGHT NOW and see who is right.

His facial reaction was priceless. I have that reserved for Honda USA, Mazda USA, Lexus/toyota, etc. now.

Reminds me of a sucker I meet a few years back. He thought his Honda Civic was a six cylinder, asked him to show me, btw with an expression of awe in my face. So he opened the hood of the car counted the spark plug wires and then counted the oxygen sensors, like most people know are located "far" away from the wires. I said wow, went into my car and drove away hoping I would never meet that kid again.

The last time I brought my car in for an oil change resulted in a higher than usual bill. I asked the Honda tech why the bill was significantly higher than usual and he said, "oh, we used synthetic." I told him I didn't ask for synthetic. He said, "well you should be using synthetic, all S2000s come with synth standard."

OMG. These dealers can be so clueless. But I think one of the reasons they are is because they just dont see that many S2k's in their dealerships. Thats how it is around here, anyway. But, thats also really no excuse.
