Default ztec heatshield

I was just seeing some of the for sale items and happen to notice the ztec heat shield selling in the forsale forum. I was wondering if it really helps in keeping the intake a bit cooler. Also, looking at the design, is there any special things to it cause it seems like anyone can go to homedepot and pick up a thick sheet of aluminum and cut it similar to the ztec. It could even be bigger than the ztec to obtain more heat. Anyone ever try this. Thanks
