Default Is the '04 diff stronger than 00-03???

Hey guys,

From what I've read the '04's diff and rear end housing are beefier. Is this true and will it bolt into the earlier cars??? It seems like a stronger rear end and clutch could make a good performance upgrade.

Yes it is beefier. I don't know about the ability to bolt onto earlier cars.

Specifically what is beefier in the carrier assembly? Just the housing? Or did they update to a larger ring and pinion as well? I'm starting to believe more and more the theory that the pinion gear is the origin for the majority of failures. If that wasn't updated, I don't think a stronger case will help much, other than to contain the mess when the pinion fails.

Chrissa,

I disagree. It is the end caps (more specifically the bolts holding that on) that cause the failures. Again, not meaning to anger anyone, just my opinion.

See my buddy dave22's thread about his rear diff.

ACLR8,

Thanks for the link. Looking at those photos though, it looks like you can see some beaching in the metal on the pinion where it broke. That would lead me to think that the pinion was slowly failing over time and finally let loose and killed everything with it. I think moparacker offered that opinion too in the thread.

There was another thread somewhere that talked about metal fatigue. Let me find it...

Here it is. This covered krazik's dead diff. It's a pretty good case study on what went wrong with that particular diff. Take a look at it:

I still think the pinion is the origin. Anyone else want to offer up an opinion?

Chris.

Chrissa,

a good read. I guess that has merit as well. dave's car had been FI for most of it's life including right after original purchase.

In both dave and my case now, both gear sets were treated at Performance Cryogenics. They will be on this earth long after I will.

Sorry I didn't see someone asked this?

Call Performance Cryogenics in North Carolina!!! Go to the Source and mention the 2 S2000 guys in VA sent ya. PM me and I will get you the number but it won't be for a couple days. It is about $90 for a ring and pinion.
but I suggest you call them!
