My wife just saw the pic of your living room and said "Obviously, he's not married"...

Glad that you found the issue.

Lol she's not wrong. It's one of the perks of living alone. It sure beats being baked in an unventilated garage. And it's cleaner too.

Thank ya! Me too. I'm glad it's going to be a straightforward fix.

So... There have been some interesting developments in this diagnosis.

I came back to the project a day after taking those pics. I found out that there actually was a synchro spring on 4th gear. It was hiding in the sleeve. This had me confused and panicked for a day or so while I thought through what could be causing the grinding.
Then I remembered that I had swapped out 4th gear for the 4th gear from my donor transmission. This got me wondering if I had swapped over the synchro ring from the donor transmission as well. I recalled seeing a transmission disassembly video where a guy showed how he tests synchro rings. Basically putting pressure on the ring against the gear and seeing if it stays securely in place or if it ends up slipping and rotating on the gear despite the pressure. I tried this with the 4th gear synchro ring and it was very much spinning freely at any pressure. I compared it with the other synchro rings from my donor transmission and my good transmission and found this one to be the only one slipping.

I feel stupid for somehow putting the one bad synchro ring from my donor transmission into my good transmission, but I'm really glad I now have a solid answer for what was going on and got to try a new diagnostic test.
I now have a good synchro ring installed with 4th gear and I should have the transmission fully assembled tonight. I'll post an update once I have the transmission in the S and get to take it for a drive.

A guy I know said years ago, when he was dating his now wife, brought her to his house when he had most of the Birkin he built sitting in his dining room since he did not have much of a garage back then. He said the fact that she did not run away screaming told him they were meant to be lol

He said he built that chassis to the point where it would just fit through the largest door on its side with multiple people carrying it, then finished it outdoors. He now has a very nice shop but that story was great. When remodeling his house over the years, he left the mark in the wood floor where they dropped the transmission on it as a reminder!

I'll presume these aren't the Birkin's you were talking about.
