Default 4.44's or 4.77?!

I just can't decide
I'm going crazy, it looks like the 4.44's are great so why wouldn't the 4.77's be better?

The highway rpm's would be annoying but not that much. I noticed a couple guys with 4.44's wanting to swap to 4.77's.

Does anyone have 4.77's?

Any thoughts would be appreciated,
-Ed

I think it would be a little too extreme for the street.

i dont see the problem with 4.77's on the street. contrary to what ron smith says, you Wouldnt be shifting ALL the time..... with 4.77's it would just be like u are in one gear lower all the time....

if you are in 3rd with the 4.77's it would be like being in 2nd if you had the stock FD

the only problem i see is on the freeway, which would mean higher rev's 4000rpm = ~65mph with the 4.77 4000rpm = ~70 with 4.44

It would NOT be like being in 2nd when you are in 3rd. There isn't a full 1 gear difference until you get to 6th gear. Try driving in 5th gear on the highway for a while. That is what your 6th gear would be like with 4.77s.

The Reverend has created the coolest gear calculator I have ever seen (Here). You can see what the difference will be between a stock S2000 gearing, and the 4.33, 4.44, 4.77, etc.

Yeah,

I just tried driving in 5th on the highway a couple days ago and decided that 4.44's are probably the best all round choice but 4.77's could be faster around tight tracks.

The gears are about 900 and are made by J's racing. I think import development sells them. Their is a group buy in the market place for some SPEED revised rear ends. I don't know about their quality though.

They are very pricey, but great bang for the buck.

Worst case I get the 4.77's and decide they are a bit annoying. I'll have an excuse to get 17's to shorten the gearing back.

If you just turn up the radio it doesn't matter much It does kill your gas milage though. I only drive 2 miles to work every day, with no highway anyway.

I've been running countless spreadsheets on the gears. It's so hard to caculate how much faster the gears would be.

Anyone have a set of gears and run a stock car? How'd it go? I think as long as both cars make the same amount of shifts the higher geared car would be ahead.

"the only problem i see is on the freeway, which would mean higher rev's 4000rpm = ~65mph with the 4.77 4000rpm = ~70 with 4.44"

Ah, I just won't fix the speedo then I can trick myself into driving slower most of the time and not get annoyed by the gears. I have a portable GPS with a speedo on it.

Anyone know if somone is making a wider 6th gear for our car? That would really help me decide.

With the 4.44's it looks like you'd get 8% more power 90% of the time. With the 4.77's it would be more like 15% more power 85% of the time.

So hard to quantify.... Can't decide.... Arrggg!

I ordered the 4.777 through the groupbuy and I am kind of having reservations about it now. My concern is not gas mileage or annoying engine sound but more whether I compromised the performance of the car. Is it indeed going to be slower around a track due to a) lower top speed (doubt it) or b) requiring too much shifting or c) powerband now narrow within a given gear causing me to have to brake earlier to get all the downshifts in before a turn or not be able to floor it out of a turn since I need to switch gears but can not without losing traction.

Not sure if these are valid concerns but they have me thinking.

I'm also having reservations about my silver on all red interior. I really hope it looks like I want it to. I've been waiting to get this car for over 2 years now. Don't want it to be a disappointment. But this is another story.

i was the guy that sold my 4.44 assembly for 4.77s. 4.77s will be advantagous to run over 4.44s only at tracks that lack long straight aways. By raising the gearing, you will be shifting sooner, but will be in the powerband longer. Remember our engines don't really kick in till after 6500rpm. 4.44s are best compromise for street/track, but I don't drive the car much on the street. As for gas milage, I didn't notice any loss of gas milage with the 4.44 as opposed to stock. I'm running stock gearing right now 4.10 and really miss the 4.44s, but soon the 4.77s will be put in. FYI, after driving down at over 100+ mph from laguna seca, gas milage was not affected. I was criusing at that speed, rpms were high, but gas milage was not affected.

*edit* you're only concern with raising gearing is the added wear the engine will see from running at higher rpms. it's all relative.
