It's a torque multiplier. Tighter gears are better for narrow powerband cars. Like the s2k

I ordered the 4.77 from a site sponser....(not in the group buy)
I struggled with the 4.44 or 4.77 for like 4 months....i finally took the plunge and ordered me a 4.77. But oh my the sponser sent me the 4.44 by mistake...(I hope) Anyway I am having second thoughts and might stick with the 4.44! The higher revs in sixth gear would not bother me. The more shifting also would not bother me. But what got me thinking is
most my highway battles go from about 65 to 70 on. With the 4.77 at 70 it would be to close to redlining 3rd . At 70 with the 4.44 it would be perfect to drop down to third up to the red line at 82 or so. Also if your gonna go forced induction the 4.77 would be way to much....so maybe the misshipped gear was a blessing in diguse. Not sure but looks like I will stick with the 4.44 if I need more in the future I am pretty sure these gears will hold 90% of there value easy......just gotta pay for the install. I am scheduled for april 1 (4 week waiting list currently has 5 engine build ups before me) installed at a local speed shop.
It will cost me 300 bucks for the install all materails included(except the ring and pinion) I plan on going turbo next winter
so i'll most likely stick with the 4.44! But to tell ya the truth I am still a little unsure although all my mechanic friends and short dirt track buddies tell me the 4.77 would be to much ...Remember the s2000 also has a secondary gear in the trans which multiplies the rear gear by a factor of 1.16. They tell me the last thing I want is a squirrelly short tempered car that kicks out its behind in temper tantrums when ya really get on the throttle.

Thnx to Reverend for his handy calculator.

Heres what you get when you run 3 different final ratios and then strecth the graphs so the mph lines up in Photshop.

i have recently installed 4.77 after having 4.44 in

went to Calif Speedway to test , however had other mechanical problem(outer wheel bearing/hub), and have never been on this track.

1st impression. 4.44 is great can't see a negative. But a certain character of the car changes...that long rip you get in each gear to redline is diminished(shorter), and the powerband feels not as peaky...but acceleration is discernably better.
2nd, not sure yet on 4.77, many of above concerns seem valid, the improvement in acceleration is probably not as great from previous change, but my clutch may be slipping???, so again i'm not sure. But between gears, seem to stay in the powerband, so aceeleration from 2 to 3 to 4 seems more even. People who like the discernable slug of power that you get when you hit the top of powerband may not like, ie longer gear feels faster, but is slower. this is noticed from 4.10 to 4.44 as well, but powerband feels very flat with 4.77.

Botton line, if you already have or are getting 4.44 you will love it.
i will post back when i get my car sorted....but i'm keeping 4.44 until i test more. just wanted to post now since people were looking for feedback on the shorter gearing.

Also, i'm am generally using oversize rear tire diam, so actual final drive will be affected. but i have tried the 4.77 with both stock OD and larger rear tire and general impression seemed same difference from 4.44.

btw, choosing 6th gear over reverse was not a problem(gulp!) accelerating thru a buck twenty on the trioval banking approaching turn 4, only "slightly" more insane when i took off the rear wing! got to indicated 156mph, about 130+, but had to quit after only 2 exploratory sessions(left rear vibration from hub bearing disinegrating) with the rear wing trimmed i probably could ping the rev limiter in 6th, although i'd much rather do that going straight...if you know what i mean.......

I was curious as to how much time in tenths of seconds, the other gear ratios adjust the 1/4 mile time?

fyi - if you want a set of the gears, I'm currently gathering orders through next week for the next order of gears. please pm/email me for pricing/payment information.

vananron - you might want to check wesmaster's impressions and times on his latest trip to the drag strip.

You guys are always full of info...too cool. But each track will be different, and the gearing might not always be right. Don't take any offense, but do most of you guys rake in ALOT of cash?? Swapping stuff in n out gets expensive. I did it in the past and kinda learned my lesson.. just asking.
